Character Learning

I'm proud of her. She can read these complicated characters.

We started to read and make sentences by ourselves.
I spent a whole day to design these character puzzles. Children love them.

I found the bookTurkey Trouble Chinese version.
Today I told the story to my class.
I love the way to learn language from a story.

Happy Moon Festival!
We made traditional moon cake and chocolate moon cake.
We tried to draw on the fans to celebrate Moon Festival as well.

Made a table Mandarin games for all the kids. Idea is from my daughter's English table game.
Different color star represents different questions. Kids need to read the questions and answer them.
Hope they will have fun in the learning.

Please let them say at home when you give them watermelons

We kept practicing saying"I want watermelon" "I want more watermelon" in Chinese while we having snack. Two girls can say the sentences fluently and independently. No reminders. To reach the two sentences I used three big watermelons.

Our new reading program "Chinese Library Time"

Our dragon festival. 端午节 Duan Wu Jie.
So glad to see kids are used to write characters in their project.

The story of a leaf
A tea leaf falls into water and changes the taste of it. Tea was born from the encounter between water and fire, life and death. The fate of tea is the fate of the Chinese people.
We introduced how to make a good cup of tea to children and the spirits of Teaism which are: Peace, harmony, balance, Calm, respect and discipline in your mind.

Children tried to make a book for the Mother's Day.
One the page describing what mom Likes, every kid wrote “ME” in Chinese.

They need to say the number, do the book keeping and count the total revenue in Mandarin.

They learned numbers and greetings through a grocery roll play.

How to teach Characters combined with culture and knowledge?
I noticed Chinese people named the planet by their way.
You’ll notice the first five (excluding Earth) that all have elements: water (水), metal (金), fire (火), wood (木), and earth (土) in their names are also the ones relatively closest to Earth. This also means that they are visible by the naked eye, and to ancient astronomers. Naming them after those specific elements has to do with the traditional Chinese concept of Wu Xing (五行 wŭ xíng) which was used to explain a large variety of phenomenon. The ordering for these phases are:

Wood (木 mù), Fire (火 huǒ), Earth (土 tǔ), Metal (金 jīn), and Water (水 shuǐ)

This order is set, and doesn’t change. As the names came based on which ones looked larger and brighter in the sky, so we have them seemingly out of order with water (水), metal (金), fire (火), wood (木), and earth (土). However, to the ancient astronomers of China, they would have been wood (木), fire (火), earth (土), metal (金), and water (水) based on what they could observe, and which ones seemed larger, and brighter (thus, to them, closer to Earth).
I can't wait to make the 3D science model project with the children.
That is what I prepared for two days.

Lantern Festival

Thank you for all the parents and friend who supported and encouraged me. Without you we cannot accomplish the beautiful children's play--An's seed. Every child is a precious seed for their parents. We tried our best to grow it. However,
Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

Happy Valentine's Day.
Children tried to make a card in Chinese.

We are talking about love yesterday. Who is your loved one and find the characters for them.

Today's project: 24 Solar Terms—Spring Commences. "24 Solar Terms" reflect the changes in climate, natural phenomena, agricultural production and other aspects of human life, including clothing, food, housing, and transportation.
We started the new program today.
Students are required to observe what happened this week outside and inside of their homes. They need to draw the observations, practice the characters and do a presentation.
When they told me, "outside part is boring." I know they learned. This season is not colorful.
They did a great job!
We learned language from culture. But what is the culture? It is food, clothes, customs and habits.

We learned how to make a Chinese bun 包子。(sounds about zi). It's special for the pig year.
I tried my best to let children know what China and what Chinese is. I hope they can learn it from food, plants, nature mother and labor practice not only from books. Because language is living.

Most of the overseas Chinese teacher will choose not to teach kids writing Character. I chose the road less travel.
Every single Character has its own story. History, culture and spirits will be shown in the character. The logogram language is a totally different way of thinking. It's easier for kids to remember and it's a good exercise for the brain.

Took 2hours to finish the exam. As a Chinese writer, I thought I didn't need this certificate. However when I got it I was so happy.

How to do a project in Mandarin learning? We did our body book and face book.

Learned the characters, thank you, you are welcome, hello and good bye

Thank you and you are welcome.
4 years old, learned few months, can say, can use and can recognize the character! Good job, girl!

Write down your self-introduction

My students could do very fluent self-introduction in Mandarin independently. These two can write them down. I am proud of you!
