[01/18/16]   Unique experience for me during a pistol class. Typically, when students are conducting the shooting portion of the class. I coach one on one with each student. I use a Smith and Wesson model 22A-1 target pistol with each student, to ensure they have mastered the basics of fundamentals and safety before we utilize larger caliber firearms. Now, as experienced shooters know, the new shooters are typically the reason for shooting errors, and the coach watches primarily their grip, body position, trigger control, follow through to ensure they are are consistent. Most instructors are happy with shooters hitting 9 inch circle at 5, 7, 10 meters. I have my students shooting at a 1 inch black sticky on white paper. Well, our course today we had 6 fine students. Each was maintaining a 1 inch to 3 inch group, consistent, the first three shooters were dead on. Somewhere in the fourth shooter, they started shooting high, and slightly left. Typically, we will always assume it is the shooters sight alignment, if 'all the other fundamentals are being observed and conducted properly. The challenge for me today as an instructor, is the Smith and Wesson Model 22A-1 which I have used for 4 years. 'Broke'. The rear of the upper receiver basically, snapped off, but did not fall off, which I allowed the rear sight to adjust, by raising up, and slightly to the right. So each shooter started shooting slightly left, and high.

Confidence in my tools (We have used this pistol for 4 years) is extremely high.. After the second shooter, hitting 'exactly' like the shooter before him. The hairs in the back of my neck tingled and I asked to see my training pistol and did a 10 round group. Each round being high and to the left, but all were on the top left corner of a 1 inch sticky at 7 meters. I inspected the firearm, it still looked and functioned well. I did not see the crack during this on the range, visual inspection. I did not disassemble the firearm. At this time. We resumed with the student, and the rear of the upper receiver fell off. I will attach a picture. So, I am posting this, as a reminder to all of us. Even the best tools can break over time. Sometimes, in amazing ways. This pistol was never dropped to my knowledge, and is maintained after each class. The pistol had been used on the previous Saturday with a 10 student class and had no issues.

Great class folks. Now to re-shoot two students, to boost confidence, that it was not them shooting high and left.
