Offering diverse photography classes and workshops to the local community. Also, I sell prints and photography services.

Thanks for your interest in my photography! My name is Yael DeFaye, I was born in Paris and spent my first 29 years in Europe. I’ve traveled to different continents and have enjoyed learning from different cultures and people. At the end of 2006, I arrived in the San Luis Valley, Colorado with my little family that has since grown. I became a US citizen in April 2012.

The part that may interest you the most might be my passion in photography. I bought my first digital camera at the beginning of the century while traveling in Hong Kong, and in 2007 I bought my first DSLR. I still remember the first time I brought the camera in front of me and looked through the viewfinder. I have spent years learning photography with lots of failures and some great successes.

With that, I started teaching photography to the local community and offered different classes and workshops.

Feel free to look at my photography and visit my store to acquire the prints in the different format going from canvas to metal.

I enjoy photographing landscapes, architecture, wildlife as well as creating environmental portraits and when the occasion arise I offer senior, family, wedding and other events/subject photo sessions.

"Soothing spring sunset"
I love clouds so this season is my favorite. We get rain and wind and it creates those wonderful sunset as you see here.

That's what I miss from my home country, all the big clouds we had. I'm glad we have all those sunny days here don't get me wrong. Clouds are like the representation of the emotion of our sky, either happy without them or sad when full of them. With them, the landscape can change and show you its different faces.

"Smiling at life"

Thank to my friend Michael, I got introduced to Mirian who wanted senior pictures. She had found an amazying location in Antonito and helped me discover a part of history of that town I didn't know about. We took pictures in the old Warshauer Mansion. I will never be able to forget that place.

Something else I will never be able to forget is Mirian's smile. It took a little while to have her show it on camera but once I saw it, it had to be in every pictures. I'm just sharing that one today with you.

"In company of a raccoon"
Yesterday afternoon I really wanted to go take pictures and I try to go with my daughter since she's showing a small interest in photography. Sadly we managed to leave after diner so we had a limited time the golden hour. Probbaly the best picture I took that evening was of a pink raccoon!

"View of the dunes"
No matter where you stand, our sand dunes look incredible while trying to mimic the relief of our mountains. Every year I think that I should climb them but I have never have, I'm hoping this year to be different. Some clouds would be great, without wind would be even better! If anyone wants to climb them with me and take a few pictures on top, just IM me.

Up close and personal
With the snow melting, is was time to go see some waterfalls. My friend took a quick trip to Treasure falls. Not a lot of people there, though lots of snow pack along the trail to get up there. It took us a bit longer to reach the top and we had to be careful about going down. Once up there, I decided to go as close as possible to the fall as I could while staying safe. I had to figure out a system to change my lens, mount my camera and take a picture without having water on my lens, that was really interesting to do! My camera is weather proof so that helped a lot but depending of the strenght and direction of the wind, I was getting socked like I would if I was taking a cold shower back home! Luckily, it was warm in the sun and I got to dry really quick. This waterfall isn't my favorite one, but it had been 8 years since I went there so it was time to revisit it again. The journey with my friend are always great no matter what.

Black and white
After doing the prom picture for Jaylynn, her mom Delsa told me she loved black and white images. It had been a while since I had done that so I worked to create that rick black you see in some old pictures. Working without any form of colors is so appeasing for some reason, I really love doing that. Of course I love colors a lot but there is someting about this type of photography!

Flying over
I love this image for several reasons. One, I love planes. Two, I was able to see that in the San Luis Valley. Three, the editing process ussed to require using Lightroom and Nik Collection, this version has only been edited in Capture One Pro.

Does anyone know if Alamosa will have an Air Show this summer?

Camille
With the warmer weather we have been having, I have been requested to do more and more portraits. I had the chance to be with Camille, a hard working woman who's pushing herself in getting a Master degree to help others. Not only it is nice to photograph beautiful people but also those who have a perfect heart.

On the way home after finishing a photo shoot at the Sand Dunes last Saturday evening.

Waiting...
The day of the Crane festival, I woke up at 5.30am on a Saturday to make sure I would be there early enough. When we arrived, we had a wonderful sunrise so I snapped a few pictures. If you have been following my post, you know that only on the way back home we saw the cranes. So before our way back, that was the only picture I thought was interesting, but no matter what I thought that one image was worth it!

An expression of love
It must have been a month ago when this couple contacted me for a winter wonderland engagement photography session. We had the right timing and receive more snow 2 days prior the photo shoot. We walked knees deep into the snow. The location was perfect! What was even more is seeing those 2 together and their love for each other and their upcoming wedding this year. It's nice to see the young love and how much truth there is in it. Even for an older guy like me, it's a great reminder that we are push to grow up, be more responsible, more mature but that the way we love and are loved shouldn't get old.

An unexpected encounter
Every year, around the same time and same location I go meet the cranes like so many other photographers and spend a good hour take pictures. This year it has been different, I followed my routine and waited, we saw a few cranes fligh by but none of them landed. Pretty quick we realized that this year would be different. The crane didn't gazer together has they normaly do in the morning, instead they where all over the place except that one spot. We thought we wouldn't get lucky this year but on our way back we saw a bunch of them in a field!

During the summer, it's a lot easier to go on an adventure and hikes for miles. Seeking treasures nature took years to prepare for us. I have planned a few trips for this year.
March-April, heading to a 250 feet waterfall and I don't know what the surrounding looks like, so that should be fun.
April-May, back to a waterfall I have seen last year, except this time we're going to explore the surrounding. We're hoping to find more waterfalls there.
June, back to Wheeler and spending the night there. The goal is to take pictures of the milky way with all the rock formation. We'll have to find a prime spot for that.
July, going for a long hike to find 3 major waterfalls, one is 500 feet tall with aspen trees at the bottom and the other one is about 700 feet. No clue what the 3rd one is since it doesn't always flow. We'll be spending the night at the first waterfall to get pictures of both sunset and sunrise.
September-October, if I'm lucking enough, I'm hoping to go to a big city to photograph both the old and new architecture and the nightlife.
Those are just personal landscape projects, I'll keep doing my classes, senior pictures as well as weddings.

____________

It was a first for me since my friend and I decided to rent snow shoes to go hiking up in the mountains. Walking with them wasn't that bad, just had to lift mew knees higher. Though once you reach an edge and try to turn around tight and walk backwards, it's a completly a different kind of sport. It was a wonderful experience, we were hoping to see some ice where the waterfall was but instead it was just foot and foot of snow all aroudn us. The only thing I regret was that we didn't take any pictures of the snowmobilers going up and down those hills, it would have made some amazying pictures!

I have been known for my landscapes, senior and family pictures but I have also been doing weddings for a quite while. I love seeing everyone dressing up, the wonderful venues, the magnificent decor, and lights. Above all, I admire seeing all the love, not only between the future spouses but also from all their families and friends united to celebrate a perfect union.

Now imagine a few years from now, when your kids or grandkids sitting of your lap would ask you about how you two met or when you go that wonderful ring? You'll be able to show them that album with all the astonishing pictures and tell them all about the laughter, the tears of joy and those special moments.

If you are looking to capture those memorable moments forever, I would love to meet with you to go over your expectations and offer you a custom wedding photography package.

____________
One thing I love about winter is the fog and how it creates perception and depth in the image. There isn't much in this picture but those mountains in the background sperate different element in the frame and makes the bridge stand out in the foreground. The fog allows to play with the contrast of an image to make the user focus on what you want them to. It's a few things I have prepare for a future 301 - Master your vision class, I'm hoping I'll have it ready for this year.

"Happy New Year"
#yaelphotography #binded #sanluisvalleyphotographer
http://www.yaelphotography.com
____________

The traditions around the new year is to evaluate and plan goals. I don't do that in particular, I do that very regularly but I would like to join everyone and give you a few aspect I have been working on and hoping to do next year.

I have updated my photography classes, through outthe years I have tried to make it more practical by include small workshop during the class. This year I will keep on doing the same and also provide more explanation on Focus Area and Focus Mode and which one to use for what circonstances. Also, I do have a reference guide for selecting the appropriate shutter speed, I have now created one to for the Aperture so you a reference guide to select the right depth of field depending if you are doing senior pictures, group picture or landscape.

This past year I started working more with special projects, people wanting to tell their stories or share their vision. I have a few more project like that planned for next year and I hope to have even more coming.

I have also decided to not get any new gear for my photography, except if it's something I really need for a particular photoshoot. Either June or September, I'm hoping to travel to a big city somewhere in the USA. I love the San Luis Valley but I am missing so much architecture, both old and new. I missing the crazy amount of people. Al the lights at night. The mix of culture and behavior. If you have any thought of where I should be looking at going, feel free to drop me a line.

Lastly, I want to continue doing weddings, seniors and family pictures. I love meeting new people and be part of that memory they are creating with and for their loved ones.
