It is with great sadness that we note the passing of a great scholar and colleague, Clifford Adelman. Cliff spent an amazing career studying student access and success. His work has informed many other researchers, including myself.
Cliff was gracious enough to review a final draft of my dissertation before it went to committee. I remember being very nervous about his feedback. He was just so smart! But he helped me strengthen my study about vertical transfer. And for that I am always thankful.

Data from the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics shows the vast majority of undergraduates are now classified as nontraditional - meaning they have at least one of the characteristics which tend to define nontraditional students - including having dependents, being a single caregiver, having delayed postsecondary enrollment, not having a traditional high school diploma, being employed full-time, attending school part-time, or are independent of their parents for financial aid reasons.
ecampusnews.com NCES data shows what institutions have been scrambling to accommodate: massive numbers of “nontraditional” postsecondary students.
