Fathers, adoptive fathers, step fathers, pseudo fathers, grandfathers, and all the variations of fathers, we celebrate you today ❤️

We all play our part in our children's lives, and fathers are no different! Comfort, love, and adventure are what I think about when I think of fathers, and I want to give some extra special salutes to all kinds of fathers today!

Let’s stop comparing mothers and fathers because their roles might differ in some families, but they are never less important than the others!

For fathers new and old, for single fathers doing it all on their own, and for anyone who will become a father in the future, we love you, and we appreciate you and all that you do ✨

To anyone who feels this day is extra heavy, and you are missing your father today, you are not alone ❤️

Juneteenth marks the day when Texas finally received the news about the emancipation proclamation being signed by Abraham Lincoln. On January 1st 1863 the emancipation proclamation was signed but two years would go by before the news hit Texas. June 19th 1865 becomes the day when many men and women learned about their freedom for the first time!

While we now live in a society where news can be shared within seconds through social media or any news outlet online it wasn’t always like that. Juneteenth is a day for us to be reminded that having access to information and education is very powerful!

Most importantly Juneteenth is a celebration of ancestry! One way to educate your children about Juneteenth is to teach them about your own family tree and ancestry. Create a family tree together as a family and try to find as much information about your ancestors as possible to teach your children about where they come from. You might find information you never knew before!

When raising our children, it’s important to look at ourselves and what traumas we may be passing on to our children. For example, if you grew up with strict parents you might still be hard on yourselves which is a potential behavior pattern our children will mimic to either themselves or others. Be sure you treat yourself and others with kindness and respect and your kids will do the same.

What Does Mindfulness & Mental Wellness Mean To Children 🙇

Mental health and wellness is not only for adults, but for kids too. While we as parents and adults talk more frequently about mindfulness and the importance of mental wellbeing, we need to use that same energy for our children.

Whether your child is not listening or going through behavioral issues, these actions stem from the state of your kid's mental health. The topic of mindfulness and mental wellbeing does not need to be one that we shelter our kids from, but instead a topic that needs to be talked about openly. We as parents need to ensure our children know the meaning of mental well-being as well as its importance. Starting to plant this knowledge and awareness into your children at a young age will in turn make your kids more aware and in tune with the importance of their own mental health.

I wanted to share my experiences as a kid and now within my family on how we deal with mental health and how we acknowledge its importance as a family.

How to Check-In with Your Kid's Mental Wellness 🗣️

A lot of times as parents we are so swept up in the concept of checking our own mental health, we forget checking in with our kid's mental health is just as important! Often as parents we wonder 'how do I ask about their mental health?' or 'how often should I check in with them?' or 'I'm not sure they know what mental health means?' these are all valid and important questions!

You want to have a strategy when approaching your children about their mental health. One tip I recommend is that we can refer to mental health as "mental wellness" or "our mindfulness" or "our overall feelings" depending on age range. When it comes to asking, it's valuable to consistently ask simple and direct questions that can lead to revealing answers about their overall state of mind. Things like "are you feeling down today?" "are you nervous about something?" "seems like you might be frustrated, do you feel a bit frustrated?" to start and move into stronger questions like "have you been feeling down longer than just today?" "how long have you been feeling sad?"

I wanted to share my approach when checking in on my kids' mental health as it is crucial to ensure their mental well-being is in the right space, especially in the world we live in today.

Tips to Help Our Kids Feel Safe During Times of World Violence & Conflict 💔

With recent shootings in schools and grocery stores - places we take our kids regularly - we can't help but feel scared as parents. With violence and disagreements playing out on social media and on television, we are still tasked with the difficult responsibility of raising confident, positive, kind, aware children. This is a tough job for us, parents.

Our children are living in the same chaotic world we are, and it’s our job to help them feel safe despite what is swirling around us. But how do we raise children during times of extreme violence like these?

With the tragedies that have taken place over the past weeks in Uvalde, Texas, and Buffalo, New York, and over the past years in this country and around the world, in places like Ukraine, I wanted to share a few tips to keep in mind when talking to your kids about these situations to help them be aware, feel hopeful, and most importantly make them feel safe.

How Bullying Affects Mental Health

When discussing the topic of bullying and all of the negative effects that come with it, one of the biggest impacts can be on a child's mental health.

Not only in the moment that the bullying occurred will doubts and mental hardship become present, but these effects could become lasting throughout the child's life. It's important as parents to not only know how bullying affects our kids' mental health, but it is equally as critical to use these issues as examples to teach, prevent and create discourse surrounding this topic with your kids.

Here are a few of the horrible affects that children who endure severe bullying may face.
