Even when learning choreography, the lessons you learn at the barre can also apply to less familiar positions. While lunging on the ground, note how the knee is still rotated out over the toes. Arms are lengthened through the back, and the neck is elongated. Technical training is a great home base when approaching new positions. đ đ

Something special about Verity Ballet is the intentional and individual attention and training? A part of this includes attending pointe shoe fittings with our students, to ensure they end up with a shoe they love.
Pointe shoes can be difficult to get just right⊠but this has been a specialty of Miss Hannahâs for almost a decade! From choosing a shoe, breaking in, and troubleshooting once they get them to the studio, we are here to listen, help, and be involved!

Ballet is for homeschoolers??
Extracurricular activities are vital for the holistic development of children, offering benefits that extend far beyond the confines of the classroom.
For homeschooled children, these activities are particularly important as they provide opportunities for socialization, physical activity, and the development of diverse skills. Among the many extracurricular options available, ballet stands out as an exceptional choice.
Ballet is an art form deeply rooted in history and culture. Through ballet, homeschooled children gain exposure to classical music, literature, and various cultural traditions. This exposure broadens their cultural horizons and fosters an appreciation for fine art. Ballet encourages artistic expression, allowing children to convey emotions and tell stories through movement. This creative outlet is invaluable for developing imagination and a sense of aesthetics.
Many homeschool families are in search of opportunities to make new friends and socialize with their peers. Extracurricular activities, such as ballet, address this concern by providing a structured environment where children can interact, collaborate, and form friendships with others who share similar interests. Ballet classes bring together children of various ages and backgrounds, fostering a sense of community and belonging. These interactions are crucial for developing social skills, including communication, teamwork, and empathy, which are essential for personal and professional success.
Ballet is a physically demanding activity that promotes overall health and fitness. Regular participation in ballet classes helps homeschooled children stay active, improve their coordination, flexibility, and strength, and develop a lifelong appreciation for physical exercise. Ballet requires discipline, focus, and perseveranceâqualities that are transferable to other areas of life. The structured nature of ballet training instills a sense of routine and responsibility, helping children develop time management skills and a strong work ethic.
Did you know that Homeschooling also lends itself well to aspiring ballet dancers? Because of the demands of training at a younger age, some dancers join professional companies around as early as seventeen years old. In order to accommodate for this, continuing studies becomes difficult when attending traditional schooling. Similar to child actors, many serious ballet students benefit from already being prepared for a more independent learning environment needed to sustain continued learning.
One aspect thatâs always underrated in ballet is brain power; the cognitive and emotional benefits of ballet are profound. Learning and memorizing complex choreography enhances cognitive functions such as memory, attention, and spatial awareness. Ballet also develops creative and emotional intelligence for children, allowing them to express themselves creatively and manage stress. The dedication required to master ballet techniques builds resilience and boosts self-esteem as children achieve their goals and receive positive reinforcement from instructors and their peers.
For homeschooling families, integrating ballet into the curriculum can enhance the educational experience. Ballet can complement subjects such as physical education, anatomy, music, and history, providing a multidisciplinary approach to learning. Homeschooling dancers receive a well-rounded education that balances academics with extracurricular pursuits.
As we are preparing children to navigate the complexities of life, incorporating ballet into the educational journey can enrich the learning experience and help your children reach their potential.

I already made that mistake once before. It shouldâve been fixed by now.
As you scroll through Instagram and social media, mesmerized by videos and photos of ballet dancers gracefully executing impossible feats of flexibility, astonishing extensions, huge leaps, and pirouettes with double-digit turns, a wave of admiration mixed with self-doubt washes over you. Will I ever be able to do that???
The comments section, tells a different story - "You're not doing it right," "You're focusing on the wrong thing. It's the artistry that matters," or âthatâs nice, but whereâs the technique???âfollowed by self-deprecating remarks from commenting dancers tearing their own abilities apart. This juxtaposition of breathtaking performances and harsh criticism highlights the problem of perfectionism in the world of ballet.
Perfectionism in ballet is often fueled by three main sources: critique from the teacher, the comparisons with peers, and the relentless voice of self-criticism. When all three converge, bombarding a dancer with messages of inadequacy and not being good enough, it creates a tremendous amount of pressure and distress that extends beyond the confines of just the dance studio.
The question then arises - how can this cycle of perfectionism be addressed? Is it something that needs fixing or simply an inherent part of the ballet culture?
Ballet, as an art form, is intrinsically tied to the concept of growth. Every dancer is at a different stage in their journey - some just beginning, some in the midst of their development, and others who have reached a level of maturity in their artistry. Each stage carries its own unique strengths that require nurturing and encouragement. Discipline acts as a guiding force, providing structure and maintaining quality control in the pursuit of excellence.
However, it is crucial to recognize that mistakes are an inevitable part of the growth process. In the words of Wayne Gretzky, "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take." Ballet dancers, like athletes, must embrace the inevitability of making mistakes as opportunities for learning and improvement. These mistakes shape the trajectory of their journey and contribute to the evolution of their artistry. The idea of perfection, then, isnât obtained by eliminating mistakes, but by working through them.
Live performances embody the essence of imperfection and unpredictability. Unlike recorded videos that can be edited and perfected, live dance showcases the raw, authentic moments where mistakes are woven into the fabric of the performance. Each misstep, each stumble, becomes a part of the narrative, creating a unique and ever-evolving experience for both dancers and audiences alike.
In essence, the dance world must strike a delicate balance between striving for excellence and embracing imperfection. Perfectionism, when taken to extreme levels, can stifle creativity, hinder growth, and erode the joy that comes from the indescribably fulfilling self-expression through dance. By acknowledging the inevitability of mistakes, celebrating the journey of growth, and fostering acceptance of individuality, ballet can truly excel as an art form that thrives on the beauty of imperfection.
