If you would like to sign up through our Enviromental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP), please come by our office at 571 South Louisville Street, Ackerman, MS 39735. The deadline for applications for the first ranking period is November 18, 2016.

Welcome

Your county Soil and Water Conservation District, a member of the Mississippi Association of Conservation Districts (MACD), announces its annual call for applications for four scholarships to be awarded in January, 2016. First place $5,000; Second place $5,000; Third place $5,000, Fourth place, $3,000 and Fifth place $3,000. These scholarship awards are open to any college sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate student enrolled in a college or university in the state of Mississippi. Any student may apply, no matter what field of study the student is pursuing, however, applicant who has a conservation-related field of study may be awarded extra points.
MACD is a non-profit organization made up of the state’s 82 Soil and Water Conservation Districts who promote the conservation of Mississippi’s natural resources through education and outreach.
The deadline for submitting application is October 1, 2015. To obtain an application, information or specific evaluation criteria, visit your Local Soil and Water Conservation Office located at 571 South Louisville Street, Ackerman, MS 39735 or visit the MACD website at www.choctawcoswcd.com

I am so proud to announce that our own Calla Gammill, Ackerman Elementary, is the poster winner of the Area Two, Soil and Water Conservation District's poster contest for Choctaw County. Calla will receive an award for her poster in July and will go on to be one of four contestants for the overall winner for Mississippi. The Choctaw County Soil and Water Conservation District would like to remind everyone that that we have a Litter Spreader for rental to farmers who wish to spread chicken litter on their farms. The charge for renting the equipment is $150.00 per day with a $50.00 deposit. The deposit may be used toward payment for use of the equipment or reimbursed upon return of the equipment.

It is recommended that anyone renting the litter spreader have at least a 60-65 horsepower, well maintained tractor in order to pull the spreader.

Anyone interested in renting the spreader may contact the Choctaw County Soil and Water Conservation District at (662) 285-6250 and come in to the office at 571 South Louisville Street, Ackerman, Mississippi 39735

TREE SEEDLING ORDERS!
The Choctaw County Soil and Water Conservation District is currently taking orders for trees to be distributed in 2015. Orders for seedlings must be placed before Tuesday, December 3, 2014. The tree seedlings will be delivered in February so that they can be planted during the proper time of the year. Please visit our website at choctawcoswcd.com or come by our office at 571 S. Louisville Street, Ackerman, MS 39735 and complete your order. We have about 30 varieties of seedlings available ranging in price from $1.00 to $7.00.

The Choctaw County Soil and Water Conservation District was so pleased to host the Conservation Carnival for the Choctaw County Fifth Graders at Choctaw Lake on Thursday 9/18/14. They were able to learn about conservation through the many conservation stops such as NRCS Biologist Jason Keenan with "skins and skulls"; Brent Bowman with the MSU Black Bear Program; MSU Choctaw County. Extension ATV Safety; and many others. They were also able to visit with the Ackerman Fire Department and tour the fire engine and see Smokey the Bear.

We are looking forward to Conservation Carnival for our Choctaw County Fifth Graders tomorrow, September 18th at Choctaw Lake. We will have guests like Smokey the Bear; the Bear Project, MSU; MS Forestry Commission; 4-H; Choctaw Co. FFA; AgEd;; Choctaw Lake Recreation; MS Soil & Water Conservation Commission; MS Wildlife and Fishers; MS Lignite Mining; NRCS Soils; NRCS Biologist Jason Keenan with "Skins and Skulls"; MSU Choctaw Co. Extension ATV Safety and our own local Ackerman Fire Department.
We are looking forward to a fun day learning about our natural resources.

The Choctaw County Soil & Water Conservation District mourns the loss of a loyal, dedicated, servant. Mr. Busby tirelessly served on the Commission for almost 44 years. He will be missed for his servant heart and dedication to Choctaw County's natural resources.
