The Dance Dept. is a studio that provides quality dance instruction for North Central KS. Instructor Jessica Polzella has over 20 years of dance experience
Jessica Polzella was raised in Abilene, and graduated from AHS. She has had a love for dance since her parents put her in ballet classes at the age of four. Upon moving to Kansas, it was difficult to find quality instruction in this area, so her parents drove her up to five times a week to Wichita in order that she could receive high quality ballet training. Since then, she has danced with the KSU dance department, Wichita Contemporary Dance Theatre, and Second Act Dance Company, of Arizona.
Jessica holds a bachelors degree from Wichita State University, and continued her dance teaching education in Toronto, Canada at Canada’s National Ballet School. She then went on to study with the Royal Acadamy of Dance in London via telecourse. Jessica teaches an Royal Acadamy of Danced based program, which insures that dancers are safe and the movement is developmentally age appropriate.
Students can expect the finest in dance education and fundamentals. Jessica is a certified Barre Fitness instructor and trainer, and her specialties include child pedagogy and kineseology. She has a passion for dance, music, and any kind of art. Jessica spends her free time pursuing various musical endeavors and spending time with her family.
Attendance and Conduct:
Students must come to class on time and prepared. Regular attendance is imperative to the dancer’s progress. Be respectful to teachers, parents, and especially your classmates. Treat each dancer with support, respect and encouragement. The Teacher reserves the right to dismiss any dancer who displays unsatisfactory behavior. If a student is more than 5 minutes late, teachers reserve the right to ask a student to sit and watch class.
Attendance is of the utmost importance, as no make up classes will be allowed. If attendance falls below 80%, the teacher may request that the student take private lessons in order to participate in any performances.
Dress code is set on a class-by-class basis. Please use the following as a guideline:
Jazz/Strength and Stretch:
Solid color leotard or form fitting tank or tshirt (no designs or logos please) Black jazz pants, leggings, or bike shorts (no short shorts) Jazz shoes or foot undeez Hair in pony tail, off face, secure. Students should not have to adjust their hair during class.
Solid colored leotard, pink tights, single layer chiffon skirt (not attached) optional. Students may be asked to remove skirts by the instructor if neccessary. Pink canvas or leather ballet shoes
(no slippers) Elastics sewn and secure, no drawstrings showing. Hair in a secure bun.
Students should not have to adjust hair during class. A demonstration will be given the first day
If a student is not dressed properly, they will be expected to sit and participate orally or by taking notes. Students who have issues with their hair will be sent to the lobby to get help from a parent. A catalog is available from Miss Jess to purchase items either using her code on Discount Dance Supply or directly through her. Cash and Checks are accepted. A list of suggested items will be provided on the first day of class. Please ask Miss Jess if you have any question regarding dress code.
Parents are asked to wait in the lobby of the Rec Center. Parents are not permitted inside the studio with the dancers, as it is very distracting to both the dancers and the teacher. Parent observation dates will be announced and should take place midway through the term. Please make plans to attend these observations, as they are very important to the student. Miss Jess will be available to answer any questions for parents FOLLOWING their child’s class.
Tuition and Fees:
All tuition and fees can be taken care of through the Parks and Rec office. Please see the front desk for any questions regarding fee scheduling. Scholoarship may be available for some students.

🔔A strong back is essential to excel in dance and a healthy back awareness should be a dancer’s top priority. Every dance movement from the head, arms and legs are connected to the strength in postural awareness through the spine.
🔔Correct posture improves dancer's technique and radiates self-confidence.
🔔The spine changes directions in dance training rabidly and requires posture at all times for safety and a dancer requires a harmonious understanding of the entire spine to excel.
🔔The spine is covered by a network of interwoven muscles that the Backalast will assist to strengthen.
🔔The elastic is strategically placed for the perfect posture proprioception and feels comfortable to wear.
