A free Child Check for children birth through 5 years old will take place from 8 a. m. to 2 p. m. on Friday, Jan. 31st, at the United Methodist Church in Abilene.

This FREE class is being offered to pregnant women who have an interest in breastfeeding. This class will provide a basic understanding about the natural process of breastfeeding
and the benefits for mom and baby. This class will also discuss possible challenges
that may arise.

Each pregnant woman will receive a complimentary gift bag.

[10/10/13]   Attention Dickinson County Childcare Providers:

United Way of Dickinson County is administering the final year of the Smart Start Training Bonus program. Eligibility rules are the similar to previous years, except the cut-off per the Wage$ schedule for eligibility has been removed. In other words, if you are still a participant in the Wage$ program you can receive this bonus.

Copies of each training certificate documenting number of clock hours must be returned with your completed application (attached). Applications and certificates will be accepted between November 15-December 1, 2013. Return paperwork to the United Way of Dickinson County, 300 N Cedar St, Ste 210, Abilene, KS 67410 or PO Box 146, Abilene, KS 67410.

RE: Underage Drinking Task Force

Abilene – The Quality of Life Coalition’s Underage Drinking Task Force Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 10, 12:00pm at 300 N Cedar, Ste. 209.

Join an ongoing effort across Dickinson County to create awareness and implement strategies that promote the prevention of underage drinking. We will plan and schedule our two Town Hall Meetings for this fall. This task force to open to the community, therefore individuals with an interest in preventing underage drinking are encouraged to attend.

This month's speaker will be Tiffany Ramey from the Abilene Senior Center. She will be talking about the services provided by the Abilene Senior Center.

Non-profit, government, and service organization leaders are encouraged to attend as well as community individuals with an interest in learning about local services and resources. Individuals will have the opportunity to share information regarding community resources, events, and issues.

The Quality of Life Coalition is pleased to announce the hiring of two individuals to assist in its mission to promote social, physical and mental well-being for residents of Dickinson County by fostering a thriving environment in which to live, work, play and learn.

Jeni Green has accepted the position of Project and Administrative Assistant providing support for health and wellness, youth substance abuse prevention, and early childhood programs. Green is a native of Abilene having spent most of her childhood in Dickinson County. She has spent the last 10 years in the Kansas City area working in the Government, Technology, Finance, and Telecommunications industries. When not working, Green enjoys spending time with her husband, Tray, and 6 year old twin boys. Jeni Green can be contacted at [email protected] or 785-263-1550.

Martha Whitehair has accepted the position of Early Childhood Program Coordinator. Whitehair coordinates a countywide initiative focusing on social and emotional development of young children. A native of Abilene, Whitehair graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in Sociology. Prior to working at Quality of Life Coalition, she was the Outreach Coordinator at the Abilene Public Library. In addition to her work with the coalition, Whitehair also coordinates the Children and Families Coalition, Inc which hosts Safe Kids Dickinson County.
