December - February are the hottest and driest months of the year in Uganda, during which conditions in rural areas can exacerbate pressures on communal water sources. The impacts on education are immediate, as schools face water shortages and more pupils are away from lessons collecting water for household use.

Lightning Arrester Installation at Rugot

Uganda has one of the highest rates of lightning strike deaths in the world, and schools often remain highly vulnerable to strikes given limited protection measures.

TEP is installing a lightning arrestor at Rugot Primary School to help provide protection from strikes.

5 years ago, a small team of educators came together with the vision of creating a culture of learning in Ugandan primary schools where pupils were empowered to share ideas, ask questions and take risks in their learning.

Since then, we've provided training to over 20 schools, building positive learning environments, strengthening learner participation, and improving reading skills through the use of phonics. We've developed school facilities, building classrooms and extending rural schools' access to safe drinking water. We've become an international network for supporting effective practices in schools, enabling local and international educators to share and enhance pedagogies in eastern Uganda.

Here's to the next 5 years!

TEP is currently working in eastern Uganda to help rural primary schools build resilience to drought. Rural schooling in eastern Uganda has been consistently undermined by seasonal droughts, leading to serious water and food shortages. As a response, we are installing a series of school water systems to enable teachers and pupils to access safe drinking water on site and prevent pupils travelling long distances to collect water from communal water sources. #educateempower

This #MenstrualHealthDay we highlight the extraordinary struggles managed and endured by young women in education in Uganda. In eastern Uganda limited access to washrooms, sanitary pads, support mechanisms and scarce education and awareness on menstrual health and hygiene remain unique and serious barriers to female attainment.

In Uganda, menstrual hygiene challenges are a leading cause of absenteeism and drop out among girls in education.

Better access to menstrual products means fewer girls skip school. And this startup is making that happen.
