Approximately 23,000 Ugandans, including 19,700 children under 5, die each year from diarrhea – nearly 90% of which is directly attributed to poor water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). Shine with Skills is taking the initiative to avail clean water in various communities in Uganda.

However, we need support to scale and have a considerable impact.

Mothers in Uganda are more than just mothers, they fend for their children. This mother goes above and beyond to provide the basic necessities for her family.

It’s our duty indeed to empower them so as their efforts pay off easily.

Being a drug addict does not mean all hope is or should be lost. We tell the story of Elijah, who is a Shine with skills trainee in formation. It is important to cast a glimmer of hope in the lives of others, let alone demonstrate that they have the potential in the event that they don’t even believe in themselves.

Hope can be sown and success can be reaped.

Research has shown that #apprenticeship has more impact on skill building than the usual theoretical approach, even better, when #theapprentice has passion for the skill in question.

This was the case for Namakula Kezia, who honed her knowledge of pharmaceutics while working on the job. She gained expertise with time and she is now the most blissful and experienced pharmacists in #Jinja.

The attitude with which we treat the #girlchild elevates the altitude at which they are able to sustain their wellbeing. The story of the girl child is a long one, but one that is now endowed with hope for a better future.

As we celebrate the #Internationaldayofthegirlchild, we seek to add value to the female gender by availing basic amenities such as education and sexual reproductive health services.

These are the mothers of the future generation, the onus is ours to ensure their well-being.

Kibuga Mbata, a slum in Masese, Jinja is occupied by citizens that deserve to live a life of not only necessity but abundance.

It’s sad to note that they have neither. A glimmer of hope still shines among them since they can afford to smile and play. #Shinewithskills as part of a Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, extended basic assistance to the homesteads in the slum by availing food for sustenance.

We can do more together!

The flair for innovation is built into the veins of these industrious young men through shine with skills innovation initiative.
An order for an animal feed-milling machine and the machine was designed and built from scratch. It predominantly crushes all dry foods and makes them suitable for animal consumption.

Today we feature two stories. In the foreground is Nakayima Janet from Buluya Village, Kamuli. She is aged 20, Living in extreme poverty with her husband both diging in people's farm to earn a living for a day.

She was forcefully led into marriage due to violence by her stepmom and she lives in a dire situation. She has no skills and only depends on ploughing other peoples farm with her husband.

She wishes to be a tailor but she can't even aford a sawing machine to practice on which later may help her sustain her livelihood thru designing and sawing different fashion to attract market.

#shinewithskills is taking the initiative to skill her in her field of interest in order to empower her with the ability to improve her livelihood.

In the background is Birungi Sandra also aged 20. She got married at 19 and now has one boy child. She was subjected to #genderbasedviolence while she grew up with her grandmother. She was inadvertently forced into marriage at this point.

Unfortunately, Sandra has never experienced the love of a #mother since she was abandoned at six months of age. She weathered the storms in her life to the extent that she now makes mats out of local materials. Sandra is limited by the lack of the necessary equipment to enhance her mat-making gig and she is usually so busy with housework.

We are being a part of their story by improving their livelihood and well-being.

Going without food is a tormenting experience, and sometimes not knowing where the next meal will come from, creates even more uncertainty. This was the grim reality at an orphanage in Mpummudde(Jinja) where the caretaker, Pastor Shamim looks after over 60 orphans. The team from #shinewithskills in partnership with #rotaryuictnakawa took initiative to provide food and other amenities to the orphans thereby creating joy in their lives.

It is a fulfilling experience to add value to the lives of these children that have been dealt lemons in their lives. We believe not all hope is lost and there is always an opportunity to make a difference.

SHINE WITH SKILLS Foundation

Its a non profit organisation founded in 2018 by ishenda Francis Who was a leader of an education institution in Jinja, His ambition is helping youths irrespective of Gender, education level and backgrounds, religious and political orientation and economic abilities. He set up the SHINE WITH SKILLS workshop that trains youth in metal works and fabrication with the help of professional trainers who are also victims of the same challenges, located on plot 60 Oboja Road in Jinja. He is passionate about the community empowerment of young people through Economic dependence.

SHINE WITH SKILLS foundation is to answer the need for youth who drop out of school before acquiring the necessary employable skills. Youth aged 13- 27 make up the biggest percentage of Ugandan population and labour force, yet with no skills. While literacy is defined as ability to read and write, Shine with Skills foundation envisions youth empowerment beyond literacy to skilling the Youth.

RATIONAL OF THE PROJECT

The Business, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (BTVET) Strategic Plan 2013-2022 dubbed ‘Skilling Uganda’ illustrates that technical-vocational skills are essential for individuals, enterprises and the economy. Our interaction with the children, parents and stakeholders in jinja shows there is need to enable individuals to increase productivity and raise incomes. A skilled workforce enables enterprises to increase their productivity and profits. Skills enable the economy to expand and grow. Employers in Uganda often complain about skills shortages that constrain production and expansion. Large segments of the population, including those working in the informal sector, lack the skills they need to lift themselves out of poverty. The economy faces critical skills gaps that threaten to limit the growth of key sectors, including agriculture, energy, information and communication among others. So the skills in sewing, computers, and organic agriculture among others that Shine with Skills will offer are required by the jobs market in Uganda. In Non-formal vocational training program for youths (dropped out of school, those who have not been in school, youths affected by early marriages/pregnancies, drug abuse and rehabilitated among others), in the Northern regions and Karamoja for example in the last four years and supported partially through special quotas by local government has enabled skill trained youths have found their way into employment (in district government, NGOs and self-employment). Shine with Skills projects that starting and delivering such skills training in Jinja and beyond will be a new dawn for the majority of Youth especially girls and women who have previously dropped out of school. The core purpose of this project is to improve the capacity of the youth in Jinja and Buikwe Districts and beyond whenever
