Neema family

Neema family

Neema family is a place of hope for Tanzanian child mothers. We offer a home for mothers and their babies where they can be safe while moms finish school.

In Tanzania, child mothers are not given the opportunity to finish their education after giving birth to their babies. Neema is the Swahili word for grace and we believe that we where brought together by the Grace of God to act as a family for these mothers and their children. At Neema mothers are supported during pregnancy and birth and get the opportunity to continue their education while also learning to care for their children.

Tanzania’s enemies of the state: pregnant young women

Stories like these are all to common in Tanzania. Help us to make a difference in the lives of young mothers. By educating mothers, we can change the lives for their children!

"Poverty is a major contributing factor to both child marriage and pregnancy. While state education is officially free, there are often hidden fees in addition to uniforms and books. Many girls live up to 15km away from their secondary school and so take a boda boda (a motorcycle taxi) to save a gruelling walk.

“So many girls have told me, ‘The boda boda rider asks me to pay and I pay with my body’,” Msoka says. Similar stories abound concerning shopkeepers, she says."

ft.com The country’s president has condemned teenage girls who become pregnant as ‘immoral’, banning them from ever returning to school

With God everything is possible. We trust that He will make things happen for us so that we can do what He has called us to do.

In an interview, Mother Teresa was asked what she said when she prayed:
“Nothing, I listen.”

So the interviewer asked:
“OK, when you pray what does God say?”

Mother Teresa answered:
“Nothing, He listens.”

Teen Pregnancy in Tanzania – Empower Tanzania

“These NGOs should go out and open schools for parents. But they should not force the government [to take back the pupils]. “I’m giving out free education for students who have really decided to go and study, and now you want me to educate the parents?” he posed rhetorically.

Pregnant girls and young mothers banned from school in many African countries

Imani Mwanza, Tanzania - who became pregnant at 16 - said: “At the school there was a nurse who would come from the hospital to check for pregnancy. They did it to all the girls every month.

"Then they wrote a letter to my parents to tell them I was pregnant and they had to go to the school. There they gave them a letter that I was expelled from school. I was three months pregnant.”

Taking a break

auxinafrica.wordpress.com As most people know, we are back in South Africa for a while. We have been taking a break, visiting with family and friends and slowly adapting to being part of fast paced city life. Our plans for …

Our Story

Neema is a Swahili word meaning Grace, for it is out of the grace of God that these plans were conceived and His grace makes it possible for us to start this NGO and do the work that God has called us to do.

In Tanzania, the law states that no teenager who becomes pregnant can continue her education in a government school. This law is being enforced very strictly. Girls in as young as 11 years old, are subjected to a compulsory pregnancy test at school twice per year, before exams are written. If a girl is found to be pregnant, she is expelled for life without a chance to return, even after her baby is born.

Neema Family will provide a safe place where vulnerable pregnant teenagers and child mothers can come to daily to get

two meals a day,
