End of Month Primary Principals Meeting – Tongatapu (May)

It was a pleasure for our team, alongside the Director of EAU, to provide an update to Primary School Principals across Tongatapu on the progress of the STAT3 activity currently being implemented.

The principals were delighted to learn more about the ongoing work, upcoming activities, and the support being provided through the STAT3 initiative under the GPE and SCA programmes. The discussion highlighted the importance of strengthening student assessment, improving learning outcomes, and ensuring schools are well supported throughout the process.

We appreciate the positive engagement, valuable feedback, and continued partnership of our school leaders as we work together to improve education outcomes for all students in Tonga. Thanking Director for Primary Diivision for the support.

A Tribute to Mrs Lucy K*m Kee Moala-Mafi

Today, the SCA Team joined the Tonga National University, the Hon. Minister for Education and Training, and the Ministry of Education and Training to pay our respects and tribute to a dedicated and hardworking servant of Tonga's education sector, Mrs Lucy K*m Kee Moala-Mafi.

When the Save the Children Australia (SCA) programme first commenced in Tonga, Lucy played an instrumental role in recruiting the very first Project Management Unit (PMU) team that would go on to implement GPE and DFAT-funded programmes for MET. Her leadership, professionalism, and commitment during the recruitment process helped bring together an incredible team that continues to serve the education sector today.

Beyond recruitment, Lucy remained actively involved in supporting the programme through her contributions to the Technical Working Groups (TWG), Project Steering Committee (PSC), and Local Education Group (LEG). Even after her retirement from MET, she continued serving the education sector through Tonga National University, where she remained until her passing.

Lucy leaves behind a legacy of service, dedication, wisdom, and a deep passion for education. Her contributions have helped shape and strengthen the education system in Tonga, and her impact will be felt for many years to come.

Our heartfelt condolences and prayers are with her family, friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of working alongside her.
Toka a he nonga moe fiemalie e 'Eikii, Lucy. Mālō 'aupito ho'o ngāue mateaki ma'a Tonga mo e Ako i Tonga. Your legacy lives on through the many lives you touched. ❤️🙏🕊️ Ministry of Education and Training Tonga Tonga National University - 'Univesiti Fakafonua 'a Tonga

STAT3 In-Service Planning officially kicked off in Ha'apai last week, with the EAU Team and SCA PMU Team delivering orientation sessions on the STAT3 Administration Handbook for teachers and principals.

The sessions focused on strengthening understanding around proper STAT3 supervision, administration processes, and ensuring schools are well prepared and aligned for implementation. Teachers and principals were pleased to receive hard copies of the handbook as an important reference tool to support consistent and quality administration across schools.

This week, the team continues onward to Vava'u to continue the in-service rollout.
A big thank you to all school leaders and educators for the warm engagement, active discussions, and commitment towards strengthening assessment systems in Tonga’s education sector. 🇹🇴
