The term is deliberately left ambiguous because your response depends on what you consider to be consistent with the "spirit of sports".

The term is actually related to one of the key concepts that we discussed before in class -- the ideals of sports.

There are three main ideals:

1) Pushing human boundaries. This is best encapsulated in the Olympic motto, "citius, altius, fortius". Directly translated, this means "faster, higher, stronger". In this conception, athletes should seek to push the limits of their physical bodies to run faster, jump higher and lift heavier weights. The pursuit of human perfection is thus to be found in overcoming physical limitations. Doping may be acceptable because it helps us achieve that.

2) Fair play and sportsmanship. If sports is meant to be a celebration of the human spirit, fair play is essential to it. In this conception of sports, humanity is about more than winning, it is about respecting fellow human beings and understanding that we owe an obligation to be fair to one another because of our shared humanity. Doping and cheating therefore cannot be condoned. Simone Biles had every right to choose not to compete when she was not feeling up to it.

3) International friendship, peace and harmony. According to this view, the primary function of sports is to bring humanity together through a celebration of our common humanity. Sports reveals that everyone is fundamentally the same, regardless of race, language or nationality. In the end, we share the same physical bodies and the same physical limitations. This is why international sporting events are so important. They help break down barriers by revealing how similar we really are. This is also why the Russian doping scandal was such a scandal. So much for international friendship!
