Foreign Language Learnings Have a Paradox in Pronunciation 12/02/2020

Foreign Language Learnings Have a Paradox in Pronunciation

Foreign Language Learnings Have a Paradox in Pronunciation According to a new study, although people who learn a foreign language are aware of typical pronunciation mistakes, they often continue to make them due to believing their own pronunciation is better than others.

Foreign Language Learnings Have a Paradox in Pronunciation

NEUROSCIENCE DAY:
'The findings show how important external feedback is when learning foreign languages because it deliberately makes mistakes aware. "We cannot improve as long as we think that we are actually quite good."'
Well, well, well... My students often think they're wrong! I'm the one always saying "Nope, you're right!" 😂

NEUROSCIENCE OF THE WEEK
My students know that often after an oral practice I’ll ask them to right the exercise down. The reason is that writing things down by hand helps create a more lasting memory. And creating long lasting memories is what learning is all about! 😉

Lion Goodman - The Discomfort of the Unknown 23/01/2020

Lion Goodman - The Discomfort of the Unknown

NEUROSCIENCE
Beliefs are often what keeps us behind. Are yours?
I've got a feeling they are. It's quite troubling the amount of people/learners that come to me with hinderances like the one mentioned below. Some times the culprit is an episode at school, some times within the family. The question is not if you're struggling with such an hindrance, the question is what you're willing to do to overcome it. 😉 Oh, believe me, it's possible! But it does require willingness, a plan of action and perseverance.

"Every belief we accumulated reduced some anxiety or uncertainty. Do you remember the feeling in school when you were called on in class and didn’t know the answer? That’s the feeling of shame, especially if kids laughed at you for not knowing. This feeling drives some children to come to a positive conclusion/belief: “I never want that to happen again, so I’ll learn all the answers.” More commonly, children take the downward path into the belief, “I’m just stupid. I’ll never learn that stuff. I give up.”" by Lion Goodman

Lion Goodman - The Discomfort of the Unknown Beliefs are useful. They eliminate the discomfort of the unknown. A rule of the mind states: “Familiar is safe and comfortable. Unfamiliar is dangerous and uncomfortable.” Our biological and anthropological history installed anxiety as a survival mechanism. This deep program was useful when the ...

Challenge of the week:
I've been using this challenge quite a bit of late. I really, really love it. It always results in great answers. Here goes:
Imagine you were an animal. As a learner what animal are you? And... what animal would you like to become? Why would you want to become that particular animal and what would that transformation mean to you? 😉
I would love to read your answer here. 🙂

A beautiful piece of advice based on NEUROSCIENCE.
Growth comes from stepping out of your "comfort zone."
Just saying... 😉

Every time you try something new, your brain forms new neural pathways and connections.

This is why some people’s minds stay incredibly sharp, even as they start to age.

Improving yourself, your skills and your brain’s amazing abilities shouldn’t stop once you reach a certain age. You should always be searching for new opportunities to learn.

Think of a few ways you can make your brain form these new connections.

Try taking a new route to work... or pick up a book on a topic you’ve always wanted to learn.

Never close yourself off to new possibilities.

Instead, dedicate yourself to constant and never ending improvement.

Learning made fun and effecctive

I’ve been a language teacher in Portugal and abroad for over 20 years now. Since February 2016, I am a certified Neurolanguage Coach®. As such, I make use of a methodology which brings together the latest research regarding how the brain works and, therefore, learns best, and coaching principles. It’s a student centred methodology in the sense that it is aligned with students needs, motivations and interests.

In a first session, we establish the learning journey and, once it starts, we tick the agreed upon goals as we go along. Half the way through our journey, we stop and review our progress and introduce whatever tweaks students deem necessary.

Sessions can be face-to-face or online via Zoom or other such digital tools.

Would you like to give it a try? Get in touch and let’s set up a trial session.
