THE ELBOW BUMP: A NEW DISEASE REVIVES AN OLD GREETING.
The elbow bump became popular iin Hawaii in 1969. When they were freed from isolation and allowed to attend their local church, members of the Kalaupapa Leprosy Settlement and the church members would touch elbows instead of shaking hands, as a way of limiting transmission of the disease. The greeting was revived again in the 2006 avian flu outbreak, in 2009 during the swine flu epidemic, during the flu epidemic of 2012, for Ebola in 2014 and now for Covid-19. But beware. It's still possible to have infected elbows!

THE COVID VIRUS HAS CAUSED AN EPIDEMIC OF UNHEALTHY MARKETING.
Since late January, we've received well over 100 emails and texts using this disease as a pretext to sell something completely unrelated to it. This is called Desperate Marketing. It's a sign of a brand without a strategy of its own, desperate to ride on the back of any big global story. If you're in marketing, or would like to be, don't do this. Nobody cares about your brand at times like this unless you can offer relief or a cure.

INNOVATE OR DIE.
In your career or your business, if you're not breaking new ground you're going backwards. According to a research study by the Institute for the Future (IFTF), 85% of the jobs available by 2030 have not even been invented yet. You owe it to yourself to continue learning while you're working. Don't risk getting left behind.

HIT A SLUMP? PLAY YOUR WAY OUT OF IT.
Research in the Netherlands and Australia found that creative inspiration comes easier when listening to happy classical music. Composers such as Vivaldi, Mozart, Bach and Tchaikovsky are highly recommended. But if classic rock or snappy dance tunes are more your thing, let the music play.

IS IT REALLY A MAN'S WORLD?
Recent research in Britain shows that women are taking on many roles once reserved for men. Between 2010 and 2018, the total number of skilled women in construction and building has grown by 83%. There are similar patterns in science, technology, farming and engineering. It's a woman's world now. Don't wait any longer.

CORRECT SPELLING IS NOT A MATTER OF OPINION.
In a recently published case, a young editorial assistant had a meltdown when her editor corrected her spelling of hamster. (The worker preferred hampster.) The girl's mother was called, insults were hurled at the editor and routine employee guidance went viral and turned into an international joke. Prepare yourself for the world of work. It's a tough place.

WHEN SERVICE IS BAD, CUSTOMERS WILL VOTE WITH THEIR FEET.
According to recent research, nearly 75% of customers will give a supplier more than one chance to fix their service. But 26% won't. After a single unsatisfactory experience, they'll leave and they won't be back. A company giving good service will be recommended to friends and family by 80% of its customers and 40% of them will post about it on social media. Time to pull up your socks.

IN SOME JOBS, IT PAYS TO STAY HIDDEN. BUT NOT IN YOURS.
The first step on the road to success in most jobs is to stand out from the crowd. Be pro-active, don't wait for instructions. Reach out and help others in your team and encourage them to help you. Don't just be a face in the crowd: be noticed.

BE KIND TO PEOPLE ON YOUR WAY UP. YOU MAY MEET THEM AGAIN ON YOUR WAY DOWN.
In business, it used to be said that you had to climb over everyone else to reach the top. We live in gentler times. Engage with other people, don't trample on them. Your journey will be quicker.

DON'T BE AFRAID TO OPEN THE DOOR.
Sometimes, opportunity knocks when you least expect it. Grab it with both hands and don't look back. The world is filled with people who say, "If only..."
Make sure you're not one of them.

09/11/2019

SOMETIMES IT'S NOT WHAT YOU SAY, BUT WHEN.
Hijacking someone's conversation is one of the most common signs of a low EQ (Emotional Quotient) or empathy if you prefer. It happens when, instead of listening closely, you wait only for them to pause and then immediately interject with a change of subject or to switch focus to your own opinions and experience. Instead, encourage them by saying, "That's interesting. Tell me more."

HOW MUCH TIME ARE YOU GOING TO WASTE TODAY?
Chatting with colleagues about personal matters, texting your friends and calling family to make plans for the weekend can chew up great chunks of your time every day. But the worst is screen-sucking. That's when you go to the internet to research something and, before you know it, a couple of hours have gone. Set the alarm on your phone when you log on. Give yourself 10 minutes. If you haven't found it by then, it's probably not there.

CHARLIE MUNGER'S PRESCRIPTION FOR STAYING SANE.
In case you don't know, Mr Munger is one of the world's richest people. He's worth billions. He has what he calls an 'iron prescription' for dealing with intense ideology. Only when he can argue against his own position better than his opponent does he feel qualified to express his opinion. That's too tough for most people. But then most people aren't billionaires.
