Brazilians snap victory at Portuguese National Championship. PussPuss/SailCascais crowned Portuguese Champions.
Brazilians of Open Bar with Henrique Haddad, Phil Lekszycki, Leonardo Lombardi and Pedro Caldas finished at the top at the SB20 Portuguese Nationals held in Cascais over the past weekend. The last day of the event was a day of emotions but the Brazilians kept a steady hand, scoring a 7, 3 and finishing with a bullet, and snapped a well deserved victory. Runner Up at the event was local PussPuss/SailCascais of Vasco Serpa, Joaquim Moreira and Pedro Alemao, that finished first among the Portuguese and was crowned Portuguese Champion. The last day was sailed in 7 to 13 knot Westerly breeze, and as predicted there were a bit of swing in the results. The first race was taken by KeepClear/NatureaSailingTeam of Bernardo Loureiro followed by PussPuss/SailCascais of Serpa, the Brazilians were 7th and MariscoNaPraça/YouthTeramPortugal struggled to finish 17th. Going into the second of the day the young team of Cascais, trailed MetalFrioSolutions of Erwin Russel, for a second place but the Brazilians finished on their stern in third. Serpa was left in the doldrums at the start and was unable to recover scoring a 21. As the wheel of fortune was spinning, going into the last race everything could happen. Keep in perspective there were two championships running at the same time, one for the overall win and another for the Portuguese title. Last race, second start and with black flag on MariscoNaPraça was caught over the line and their chances to win the event were gone and their renewal of the Portuguese title were left in the hands of Serpa that had to finish 8th or better. So eventually when the last race got underway at the third start the Brazilians played it safe but with an amazing boat speed in the light conditions flew to the gun and secure a very well deserved victory! Well done guys! Serpa’s PussPuss sailed smooth avoiding trouble finishing 5th and grabbing the Portuguese title. Beyond the podium finishers great performances by Madeira Island of John Tavares that beat Another Affair of Miguel Oliveira for fourth place by a hair. Metal Frio Solutions of Erwin Russel, with two bullets in the championship finished sixth. #GameChanger from Ukraine, FranceJaune from France, APHotels and BBDouro followed in this order to close the top 10. Congratulations to Clube Naval de Cascais and to the SB20 class in Portugal for the amazing championship. Well done Sailors! All for now from Cascais! Back in July! Enjoy your sailing!

Brazilians of Open Bar lead in Cascais
After two days and 6 races completed Brazilians of Open Bar, of Pedro Caldas lead the 39 boat Portuguese SB20 National. The Brazilians with an impressive sheet of results of 1,2, UFD,1, 2, 5 have built a nice gap to their followers MariscoNaPraça/YoiuthTeamPortugal of local Henrique Brites (2, 1, 8, 7,1, 9) and PussPuss/SailCascais of Vasco Serpa (3, 4, 15, 6, 5, 3). The Brazilians set the pace from race 1 on the wet and wild first day by leading from gun to gun making it look easy in the tough conditions of race course A, where gusts were peaking at 26knots and a choppy swell was spicing up things. Marisco Na Praça took the second race and at the end of the day both teams were tied at the top. On the second day the sun showed up, the race committee set the course inside the bay and with 10 to 17knts of wind pulled 4 races. The first one was taken by Ed Russo Skin in the Game from France that on the first upwind got a solid right hander and build it from there. Second race of the day was for Brazil that were fast tracked on the right hand corner on the first run with a solid gust flying past everyone. On the third of the day MariscoNaPraca straighten their game and dominated the fleet to take the gun followed by the Brazilians that once again hit the right corner on the last run to work it up all the way from mid teens. Well done guys! Three races done on the day done, beautiful sailing conditions, all in time, no brainer to go for a fourth and make it for the lost race on the previous day. And the last race of the day went to MetalFrio Solutions of Erwin Russel, with former Laser World Champion Gustavo Lima on board, that sailed spotless. Who is going to take it? Well difficult to say still. In theses tough fleet the ability for results to swing is high and despite the nice lead the Brazilians with an UFD can’t go wrong. The day today is staring with a strong soutwersterly and showers, by the time race starts the wind shall turn slightly to West and cool down to the 10 to 16knts range. Go sailors, good luck! May the best win!

2021 SB20 Portuguese Nationals starts today in Cascais
40 boats are lined up to take part at the Portuguese SB20 Nationals that start today in Cascais. To the strong local fleet, will join three French teams, a Dutch, an Ukrainian, a Brazilian and a team from Singapore. “The numbers are pretty solid despite that we are in a time where there is still some limitations to travelling and people are shy to do it.” commented Vasco Serpa, from SailCascais. “The class is strongest as ever In Portugal, attracting the best talent, and Cascais is a hot spot to sail. We received the Ocean Race and a 49er Olympic warm up regatta in the last two weekends for example, and we will have the SB20 worlds in early September here” concluded. In the quest for the Portuguese title the heat is on. It’s difficult to make a call on who will come on top but the main contenders are probably YouthTeamPortugal/MariscoNaPraça of Henrique Brites and PussPuss/SailCascais of Vasco Serpa from the local side and OpenBar of Pedro Caldas from Brazil, the always strong FrenchYouthTeam with Lucas Chatonnier at the helm and #GameChanger of Yulia Freespirit from Ukraine sailing this time with current World Champion Robin Follin on board. But no doubt several other teams have a chance. It will fierce competition. In a curious note the top two Optimist sailors this year in Portugal will be sailing the event too. Matilde Bandeira, this year National Champion, and first girl to achieve that in Portugal will take part on HelloNext, and Augusto Castelo Branco runner up at the Opti Natiobals will steer Vicky. The future is here! Good luck Matilde and Augusto! Weather wise, the north breeze will reign over the weekend, today some showers will make it a bit shifty and a times gusty but it looks the forecast is for a more stable pattern for Saturday and Sunday. “Such a pleasure to see not only the 30+ strong Portuguese fleet attending the Nationals but also the international teams arriving in Cascais after such a long winter of confinement. The arrival of the international teams is the sign that we are starting to travel again and I'm looking forward to the Worlds in August when the remaining international teams will join us here.” Wrapped it up Ed Russo from French team Skin in the Game and a member of the class World Council. Great event ahead, stay tuned! The show is now on the sailors! Let’s go boys and girls! 💪💪👏🏻👏🏻

Provezza of Andy Beadsworth, Simon Fry and Arda Baykal of Tayk/Istanbul claim the Dragon 26th HM King Juan Carlos Trophy in Cascais.
It was a very close event until the very last race but Provezza got the upper hand over 1Quik1 of Swiss Wolf Washkuhn, Joao Vidinha and Charles Nankin of Royal Southern Yacht Club, The two teams finished the first day tied with 6 point, finished the second day tied with 9 points, but going into the last day with only one race to be sailed and with the Swiss with a worst discard, the odds were with Provezza that just had to control and push the Swiss to the back of the fleet. And that was what Provezza executed brilliantly with match race tactics. Eventually the two boats were sitting on the last positions and with no chances of recovery for the Swiss both teams eventually retired from the race. Congratulations to the winners! The battle for third was also hot with three boats in contention for the last podium place. But consistency prized Fever of Klaus Diederichs, Diego Negri and Jamie Lee of ROR that grabbed 3rd. Jeannie of Monaco Jenss Rathsack, Diogo Pereira and Michael Lipp by winning the last race, that granted them the Stavros Trophy, still managed to pass Uranus of Pedro Leal, Pedro Rebelo de Andrade and Jorge Ferlov of Tavira. 15 boats took part in this 3 day event, that had all sorts of wind conditions in a sunny and warm Cascais weekend. It was great to see the Dragons back on the water in Cascais, with the top sailors of the class present. In a spotless organization from CNCascais once again, 8D Sailing from Pedro Andrade, one of the biggest driving forces behind the Dragon Class, had available several V6 Petticrows for the best teams to race at the top of their game.. Well done CNCascais, 8D, Pedro Andrade, the winners Team Provezza and all the sailors that took part in this great championship. We want to see the Dragons back in Cascais soon!

Zherebetsova´s SpaceCobras/BTeam blossom to take high intensity Cascais SB20 Spring Cup
The team of Liza Zherebetsova, Artem Basalkin, Pavel Rasskazov and Andrii Klochko, SpaceCobras/BTeam, from St Petersburg, Russia, sailed an almost perfect day to top the table at the Cascais SB20 Spring Cup. The Russians scored a 3, 1, 2, to come all the way from 6th place at the end of the day yesterday to take the win. We have seen many championships in Cascais but none where five boats where 4 points apart going into the last race and all of them could win. It was a high intensity day on the water, add the fact that the wind was averaging 20 knots spiced it up! The first race of the day was taken by YouthTeamPortugal/MariscoNaPraca of local Henrique Brites, followed by Ladies First/Naturea Sailing Team, with Joao Villasboas at the helm from Sport Alges e Dafundo, the Russians closed the top three on this one, and followed with a bullet on the second race of the day to take the lead of the championship then, Serpa on PussPuss/SailCascais trailed them and Tonu Tonyste, twice Olympic medallist in 470 was third on the race. All open going into the last one . SpaceCobras with 11 points, YouthTeamPortugal /MariscoNaPraca, Ladies First/Naturea Sailing Team and Open Bar from Brazil all tied in second with 13 points, and PussPuss/SailCascais in 5th with 15. The wind was hitting 26/27knots at the start of the third race of the day, Serpa on PussPuss took the boat end start tacked and caught a massive right hander that put him at the top with an uncatchable lead. Now was wait and see as the battle was unfolding behind them. BTeam/SpaceCobras let their boat speed and teamwork flow and seated in a confortable second going into the second upwind, that would seal the win for them. Toniste grabbed third again. LadiesFirst/NatureaSailing Team finished 6th followed by YouthTeamMarisco na Praca. The Brazilian were out of the race due an incident on the previous race with the YouthTeam. With these results Russians were the winners, PussPuss/sailCascais was runner up and Ladies First/Naturea third overall. But the story wasn’t over as the Brazilians filled a protest against the Youth, disqualifying them on race 5 and were granted a point average for the last race, allowing them to pass LadiesFirst/Naturea Sailing Team by a 0.2 margin to take the last place on the podium. It was intense, it was hard work, it was beautiful! Congrats to the winners and all the sailors for the amazing competition this weekend. Next race Portuguese Nationals 18 to 20th of June, Its going to be big! See u then! Meanwhile let the wind blow and enjoy your sailing!
