Maria Grazia Chiuri is the first female creative director of Dior in its 70-year history, a house that has been selling feminine charm since 1947, has a woman in charge for the very first time.

Born in Rome, she began her successful career with studies in fashion, then joined Fendi and worked at Valentino for 17 years before going to Dior.

She made it her mission to help women to express themselves as powerful and feminine through their clothing, revolutionizing Dior from transmitting charm to celebrating women empowerment.

In the days running up to her first Dior show, Chiuri’s debut was trailed by a series of mini films on the Dior social media accounts under the title The Women Behind My Dress. Women in the modern Dior ateliers, from seamstresses to calligraphers, talked about their role models. The names ranged from Princess Diana to US Senator Elizabeth Warren. Interestingly, Dior released a pre-show statement that championed Adichie’s work “examining the question of racism and the place of women in society”.

Nemonte Nenquimo is an indigenous activist playing an unprecedented role in saving the Ecuadorean Amazon. She is one of the winners of the Goldman environmental prize for her success in protecting 500,000 acres of rainforest from oil extraction. Nenquimo and fellow members of the Waorani indigenous group sued the Ecuadorean government for putting their territory up for a sale. Their legal victory set a legal precedent for indigenous rights.

She is also the co-founder of the Ceibo Alliance, an indigenous-led non-profit organisation championing indigenous rights and culture. Another accomplishment of Nemonte Nenquimo was the "Our rainforest is not for sale " digital campaign, which collected almost 400,000 signatures from around the world opposing the auction.

The Waorani people have always been protectors, but for the leader of the community, protecting the environment was less a choice than a legacy she decided she had to carry on. An undeniably voice and advocate for her community, Nenquimo says that she was encouraged by the elders to become a leader herself from the age of five.

While the tech industries are taking over the world, the gender gap in this industry remains prominent. In a PwC study from 2017, only around 3% of female students said that a career in technology is their first choice. This is most likely due to the lack of representation and female role models that truly showcase what a career in technology may look like. About 78% of students interviewed by PwC were unable to name a famous female working in technology, but were promptly able to name a man working in the industry.

How should we tackle this issue? From the root. Girls should be taught from a young age about the emerging potential careers in technology and be encouraged by parents and schools to take on those roles. Moreover, there needs to be increased interaction with technology modules throughout primary and middle school, and an abolishment of the stigma that subjects such as math and physics are “male-oriented” subjects.

But what is truly important is to allow women to reach their full potential in the industry, in order to provide a more inclusive work environment and more female role models.

At the age of 15, Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head by Taliban while she was on her way to school in 2012 following her public engagement for women’s rights. She survived this horrible attack and continued using her voice and her story to defend women’s rights and to fight for education for all girls around the globe.

In 2014 she became the youngest Nobel Prize laureate and in 2017 she was designated as the youngest United Nations Messenger of Peace. In 2020, she finished her studies in Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford University.

Malala’s courage is beyond inspiring and motivating for all women and girls in the world to be brave and raise up their voices!

Ursula von der Leyen is a German politician that was born on 8 October 1958 in Brussels.
Her educational path started in 1964 in the European School of Brussels and ended only in 2001 with a MSc in Public Health. During that period, she studied both economics and medicine.

Her political career started in 1990 when she became a member of the Christian Democratic Party (CDU). Following that, she held various political positions, the first ones being in Lower Saxony – the federal state her father had governed. After CDU won the federal election, she was named Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (2005-2009) when she implemented measures, such as paid parental leave and expansion of childcare facilities. In 2013, she became Germany’s first woman elected Federal Minister of Defense.

Since 2019, Ursula holds the presidency of the European Commission, as once again, the first female. However, the recent visit to Turkey, where she was not offered a seat next to President Erdogan, while her male colleague, president of the European council Charles Michel and hierarchically below her, did, “showed how far we still have to go before women are treated as equals”.

War and post-war periods have a very strong impact on people’s lives, but women often remain invisible when historically relating these.

During WWII, for instance, women filled men’s roles to keep the economy afloat. They were found working for the war material industry in roles like building ships, airplanes, or conductors. These unusual occupations at the time for women were due to economic reasons, not concerns about gender equality. The US government, for instance, allowed women to work for the Armed Forces, Civil Defense, and war industries. As so, studies show that women’s employment increased in WW2 from 5.1M in 1939 to 7.25M in 1943. Overall, 46% of all women aged between 14 and 59, and 90% of all able-bodied single women between the ages of 18 and 40 were engaged in some form of work or National Service by September 1943.

This shift of traditional roles can be considered as a spark that ignited the ongoing debate about gender inequality and wages. After getting the opportunity to prove during these times that women were equally qualified as men for “men” jobs, women gained more confidence and started to question their previous roles forced on them.

Meet the members behind our club: let´s start with Jasmin. She joined our External Relations team in September 2020, and during her time at NWIB, she provides the club with valuable input in organisation of the events.

For Jasmin, being a part of Nova Women in Business team has contributed to both her academic and personal growth. She particularly enjoys events held by the club, as they allow to meet people from different backgrounds, who share similar values and aim to face challenges surrounding gender equality.

Whitney Wolfe Herd launched her multibillion-dollar business Bumble Inc. in 2014 after she experienced sexual harassment and tensions with C-level executives as vice president of marketing at the dating app Tinder. She initially wanted to create a social media platform targeted to teen girls where they could only communicate through compliments. But with her knowledge in the dating space and experience in marketing, she ultimately created Bumble, a dating app that let women make the first move, which at the time, defied previous dating norms.

The IPO of Bumble made Whitney the youngest woman to take a company public and one of the youngest female self-made billionaires. She has always emphasized the importance of female advice and guidance in her business decisions, for example having staffed a female CFO at Bumble and mostly female board members, to female-led investing teams from top-tier businesses like Blackstone.

Whitney Wolfe Herd used her personal experience in her personal and business world to create change and was more than successful by taking the plunge and founding Bumble Inc.

Companies with higher levels of diversity* have a 19% higher innovation revenue than companies with below-average diversity scores.

The BCG diversity and innovation study (2017) revealed a statistically significant correlation between higher diversity levels of leadership teams and the overall innovation. Companies with below-average diversity levels reached 26% average innovation revenues while companies with above-average diversity scores had 45% average innovation revenue! This 19% difference in innovation revenue is extremely important in today’s dynamic business environment with fast changing customer needs. The difference in innovation revenue also leads to an improved financial performance by a 9% higher EBIT margin of above-average diversity score companies. So, making changes towards a more diversified workforce can have a big impact!

The study clearly demonstrated that companies with a highly diverse workforce and leaders provide more innovative products and solutions. Therefore, they win more customers and outperform their peers financially.

*The diversity perceptions were measured across six dimensions—gender, age, nation of origin, career path, industry background, and education.
