Did you know that the reason onions make you cry is due to a chemical reaction? When you cut an onion, it releases an enzyme called alliinase, which reacts with sulfur compounds in the onion to produce a gas called syn-Propanethial-S-oxide. This gas diffuses into the air and reaches your eyes, where it reacts with the moisture to form sulfuric acid. The sulfuric acid irritates your eyes, causing them to produce tears to wash away the irritant.
