On Day 2 of the Network for Emerging STEM Education Leaders (NESEL) Workshop, participants deepened their understanding of visionary leadership through two key sessions: Systems Thinking in STEM Leadership and Human-Centered Design for STEM Programs. These sessions provided practical frameworks for recognizing interconnections and developing sustainable solutions to complex challenges in STEM education.

Both sessions were facilitated by Dr. Sheryl Lyn C. Monterola, Director of UP NISMED, whose expertise in transformative STEM education and learner-centered innovation encouraged participants to reflect on their evolving roles as future STEM leaders.

The day closed with a strong emphasis on leadership rooted in purpose and strategy.

The Center for Integrated STEM Education (CISTEM), Unilab Foundation, and UP NISMED have come together to implement the Network for Emerging STEM Education Leaders (NESEL) Workshopโ€” a strategic activity under the Teacher Professional Learning initiative.

The session opened with CISTEM Executive Director Melvin Magsayo, who emphasized the importance of having a clear vision in STEM education leadership. Participants reflected on their personal leadership identities by connecting their values, thoughts, and actions into a cohesive vision. This grounding activity created a shared perspective anchored in relevance, purpose, and transformation.

Dr. Sheryl Lyn Monterola, Director of UP NISMED, deepened the conversation by exploring the principles of transformational leadership. She underscored that leadership is not a solo endeavor but a collective responsibility rooted in trust, collaboration, and a shared moral purpose. Her message: true leadership mobilizes communities, empowers peers, and drives sustainable change in education.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to build a generation of leaders who inspire curiosity, spark change, and lead with purpose.

Orbeta, M.A.Ed., Assistant Professor at the College of Education, University of the Philippines Diliman.

This session unpacked the value of prototyping as a way to visualize ideas and explore possibilities. Participants learned how to craft low-fidelity prototypes to quickly test concepts and gather meaningful feedback. Through hands-on strategies, they evaluated the usability, effectiveness, and relevance of their proposed solutions. The session also emphasized the importance of clear and compelling communicationโ€”ensuring ideas resonate with and respond to stakeholder needs.

A strong finish to Day 2โ€”where creativity met strategy, and ideas took shape.

The session focused on unlocking creativity through the metacognitive design thinking process. Dr. Joaquin guided participants in exploring strategies to generate a wide range of innovative ideas anchored in clearly defined needs and stakeholder insights.

Participants engaged in brainstorming techniques that encourage open thinking and learned how to critically evaluate, refine, and distill ideas to surface the most promising and impactful solutions for transformative learning program design.

A powerful leap from insight to innovation!

In this session, Dr. Paderna emphasized the critical role of empathy as a foundational step in understanding the needs, experiences, and challenges of learners and stakeholders. Through interactive discussions and reflective activities, participants explored how to gather meaningful insights by actively listening, observing, and engaging with those they serve. Practical techniques for synthesizing these insights were also introduced to clearly define the core problems and opportunities that drive innovation in learning program design.

This session laid a strong foundation for designing transformative learning experiencesโ€”anchored in human-centered understanding.

Joining us from Unilab Foundation is Mr. Jon Policarpio, Operations Director, who emphasized the critical need to address the deep inequities driving the current learning crisis. He highlighted Unilab Foundationโ€™s commitment to collective action โ€” recognizing that no single sector or institution can solve these challenges alone. Rooted in the spirit of Bayanihan, their approach centers on collaboration among educators, experts, and communities to uncover root causes and co-create meaningful, lasting solutions.

The opening session, "Understanding the Metacognitive Design Thinking Process and Its Application in Designing Transformative Learning Programs," is facilitated by Dr. Sheryl Lyn Monterola, Director of UP NISMED and Professor at the UP Diliman College of Education.

Stay tuned for more insights from this transformative learning journey!`
