On Day 2 of the Network for Emerging STEM Education Leaders (NESEL) Workshop, participants deepened their understanding of visionary leadership through two key sessions: Systems Thinking in STEM Leadership and Human-Centered Design for STEM Programs. These sessions provided practical frameworks for recognizing interconnections and developing sustainable solutions to complex challenges in STEM education.
Both sessions were facilitated by Dr. Sheryl Lyn C. Monterola, Director of UP NISMED, whose expertise in transformative STEM education and learner-centered innovation encouraged participants to reflect on their evolving roles as future STEM leaders.
The day closed with a strong emphasis on leadership rooted in purpose and strategy.

The Center for Integrated STEM Education (CISTEM), Unilab Foundation, and UP NISMED have come together to implement the Network for Emerging STEM Education Leaders (NESEL) Workshopโ a strategic activity under the Teacher Professional Learning initiative.
The session opened with CISTEM Executive Director Melvin Magsayo, who emphasized the importance of having a clear vision in STEM education leadership. Participants reflected on their personal leadership identities by connecting their values, thoughts, and actions into a cohesive vision. This grounding activity created a shared perspective anchored in relevance, purpose, and transformation.
Dr. Sheryl Lyn Monterola, Director of UP NISMED, deepened the conversation by exploring the principles of transformational leadership. She underscored that leadership is not a solo endeavor but a collective responsibility rooted in trust, collaboration, and a shared moral purpose. Her message: true leadership mobilizes communities, empowers peers, and drives sustainable change in education.
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to build a generation of leaders who inspire curiosity, spark change, and lead with purpose.

Orbeta, M.A.Ed., Assistant Professor at the College of Education, University of the Philippines Diliman.
This session unpacked the value of prototyping as a way to visualize ideas and explore possibilities. Participants learned how to craft low-fidelity prototypes to quickly test concepts and gather meaningful feedback. Through hands-on strategies, they evaluated the usability, effectiveness, and relevance of their proposed solutions. The session also emphasized the importance of clear and compelling communicationโensuring ideas resonate with and respond to stakeholder needs.
A strong finish to Day 2โwhere creativity met strategy, and ideas took shape.
