On Day 4 of the STEM Nexus Fellowship Program, our 17 fellows immersed themselves in the sustainable solutions pioneered by Emerson. They explored how ๐‘ฌ๐’Ž๐’†๐’“๐’”๐’๐’, a global automation leader, is set to transform industrial manufacturing through advanced technologies and industry-leading expertise.

Emerson stands as a global technology, software, and engineering powerhouse driving innovations that make the world healthier, safer, smarter, and more sustainable. Our fellows experienced firsthand how Emerson's commitment to sustainability is integrated into every facet of their operations, from cutting-edge automation to forward-thinking engineering solutions.

Facilitated by Ms. Janet Serrano, Talent Acquisition Director, and Ms. Leah Diaz, Lead Talent Acquisition for Outreach and University Programs at Emerson Philippines, this immersive experience inspired our fellows to champion innovation and environmental stewardship, driving towards a sustainable future.

Stay tuned for more exciting updates as we draw near to the last day of the fellowship program!

Many began in hardship, but with the Foundation's support, they found hope and opportunities. Parents shared their struggles to educate their children despite financial difficulties, while young people spoke of their determination to excel in their education to secure a better future. With the leadership of its Executive Director Ma. Socorro Bautista, the Foundation has been instrumental in bridging the gap for these families through scholarships, training programs, and other initiatives, enabling them to improve their lives and rise above poverty.

These stories provided new perspectives and motivation for our STEM programs, reminding us that every step we take can positively impact lives. ๐Ÿค Weโ€™re teaming up with UP Pahinungod and UP NISMED on contextualizing the curriculum in BARMM!

๐Ÿ”‘ Quality education is key to empowering individuals and driving societal progress. There are several laws and codes in place that highlight contextualization as a fundamental pillar in achieving quality education:

โœ… RA 10533 (Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013)
โœ… RA 11054 (Bangsamoro Organic Law)
โœ… Bangsamoro Education Code (BEC)

๐Ÿ“š These measures emphasize the urgency to contextualize the K to 12 Curriculum in the Bangsamoro by aligning educational content with the unique cultural, social, and historical context of the region. This imperative not only enhances the quality of education but also fosters inclusivity and sustainable development in the region.

๐Ÿง  Just like the vision of the Bangsamoro Basic Education, we at CISTEM believe in making education accessible and relevant for learners of all backgrounds throughout the country. We are looking forward to equipping BARMM learners with 21st-century skills and values that promote life, protect the environment, and celebrate the Bangsamoro identity and its diversity!

๐ŸŒฑ Letโ€™s spark young girls in STEM with a passion for Sustainability!

โœ๏ธ Over the last four Saturdays, the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) has teamed up with CISTEM for the Junior Scientist Mentorship Program on STEM Education for Sustainability. Each week has provided opportunities for the learners of San Isidro Elementary School (Rodriguez, Rizal) and Rivera Village Elementary School (Pasay City) to explore more about the Sustainable Development Goals.

๐Ÿง  In these workshops, 80 Grade 6 learners brainstormed ways to take action on pressing issues in their communities by proposing actionable solutions. These student-led community projects are currently being implemented, and they will soon be presented during the culminating activity, which is scheduled to take place at UP NISMED on May 18, 2024.

๐Ÿ’กTogether with PBSP, CISTEM is committed to nurturing young girls in STEM and their visions for a greener, brighter, and safer tomorrow!

๐ŸŽค โ€œRepresentation matters.โ€

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ”ฌ In celebration of National Womenโ€™s Month, CISTEMโ€™s Professional Learning Community was graced by the presence of Dr. Chona Camille Vince Cruz-Abeledo, MENRM, Ph.D., Associate Professor at the DLSU Department of Biology, during the 2nd PLC Assembly. We must learn more about how we can empower women and girls, whether it be through education or their chosen careers.

๐Ÿ” Dr. Chonaโ€™s session talked about how we do not have enough women in STEM, both in universities and in the workforce. Some believe that you must be a genius to pursue a career in STEM fields when in reality, CURIOSITY and RESILIENCE are more important. To encourage our students to pursue STEM, it is important to make STEM learning fun by having hands-on activities, showing videos with real scientists, and focusing on critical thinking over memorization.

๐Ÿค— Often overlooked, we are reminded that there are 3 types of support a student needs to succeed:
โœ… Role models (look up)
โœ… Mentors (look here)
โœ… Sponsors (look out)
When put together, students, particularly female students, will feel empowered and confident that they, too, can make it in STEM industries!
