MARCOS-DUTERTE DUWAG!

Presidential aspirant Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. and Vice Presidential aspirant Inday Sara Duterte did not participate and skipped Comelec’s Presidential & Vice Presidential debates held last Saturday, March 19 and Sunday, March 20.

The camp of Marcos Jr. confirmed that he would not participate in the series of debates organized by the Commission on Elections (Comelec). His camp explained that they rather continue with their preferred mode of direct communication in their campaign trail with people and engage with them through face to face interaction than participate in the debates.

This is not the first time Marcos Jr. and Duterte chose not to participate in a debate. For the past debates and interviews organized and conducted by Jessica Soho, Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP), and CNN Philippines, Marcos Jr. and Duterte’s non-participation has been a norm in most of these debates and interviews in relation to the upcoming elections.

His camp expressed their wish to honor their commitment to their supporters to be with them during their campaign sorties and events. However, they must realize that above their commitment to their supporters is their commitment to the Filipino people to face the country to address questions and issues concerning them.

The absence of Marcos-Duterte in these national interviews, forums, and debates is outright an insult and disrespectful to the Filipino people. This is a clear manifestation of how little they think our ability is to be critical and to see through their cowardice, to the point that they think they can easily avoid addressing pertinent issues of our country. It also reveals their insulting views about the role of media in forwarding democracy and empowering informed voters.

Our country does not deserve leaders who do not show up in the most difficult times. We do not deserve leaders who claim to be brave, yet, are too frightened of debates and are frightened of the voices of the Filipino people. We do not deserve cowards as our leaders.

PiliPinas: Tatak Mo, Tatak Natin Para sa Bayan condemns the absence of Presidential & Vice Presidential candidate Bongbong Marcos Jr. and Sara Duterte in the presidential and vice presidential debates conducted by COMELEC. We urge the COMELEC to be firm in penalizing Bongbong Marcos Jr., Sara Duterte and other candidates who choose to skip debates for unacceptable reasons. We urge the Filipino people to be critical of who truly deserves our vote. Let us not vote for candidates who refuse to face the Filipino people.

An empty podium represents empty promises and empty plans. A true leader shows up in the most difficult times.

ABANTE, BABAE!

Today is International Women’s Day!

We remember the impactful efforts and victories by women around the world especially in moving forward amidst this pandemic. We have seen many great women leaders around the country and around the globe who have led fiercely amidst the pandemic.

For far too long, women have been struggling against the oppressive and patriarchal system in our country. Prejudice against women has been manifested to this day through misogyny, gender norms, repression of their basic rights, violence against women, among others. As the pandemic struck our country, the injustices and discrimination against women were further aggravated.

At present, we have seen and witnessed many attempts by various individuals and institutions, even our own administration, to discriminate women and to undermine their capabilities primarily because of their gender. We have seen how women were deprived of access to equal opportunities. Despite this, we have still seen how many of our women leaders successfully led and served our country in this pandemic.

This March, as we celebrate the International Women’s Month, we further the fight of women for equality as their rights are persistently being trampled upon today. PiliPinas: Tatak Mo, Tatak Natin Para sa Bayan stands in solidarity with every woman across the nation as they struggle against violence and oppression. We will continue to highlight and celebrate every victory that women have championed that changed our nation for the better.

Alongside our fight for social justice and social progress, we must forward policies that address the root causes of the issues faced by women such as the Safe Spaces Act which ensures a safe and inclusive society for everyone regardless of gender. We call on the administration to prioritize ending all forms of violence that women in our country face by enacting laws that shall safeguard their rights and welfare.

This 2022, let us strengthen our fight to stop misogyny and discrimination. Let us not allow gender to be a hindrance for women to lead and to make a difference. This coming elections, let us choose our candidates, not based on gender, but rather, on their principles, track record, and platforms.

Women belong in a world where they are valued and respected. For women deserve a world where they are free to lead and make a difference.

Sulong, kababaihan!

With the recent passage of the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020, commonly known as the Anti-Terrorism Law, the administration continues to assert that it only aims to safeguard the security of the Filipinos. However, the said law has gained the attention of prominent, independent institutions and personalities as it is deemed as unconstitutional and a threat to our democracy.

This is a clear manifestation of the government’s weaponization of the law as anyone can easily be labeled as a terrorist and be arrested without a warrant of arrest, which are signs of silencing dissent.

As a youth-led organization that aims to forward voter's education, PiliPinas: Tatak Mo, Tatak Natin Para Sa Bayan urges all Filipinos to be aware not only of our right to vote but also of our right to free speech. We should never forget that our fundamental human rights should never be taken away from us.

Let us continue being critical and analytical of the government especially as they continue spreading false claims and statements! Let us call out the actions of our government that threaten and attack us!

We refuse to be silenced. We will continue to speak out.
