The Biology Teachers Association (BIOTA) of the Philippines-National Capital Region Chapter and the Lasallian Institute for Development and Educational Research (LIDER) invites you to the free webinar titled:

"I-STEM-PBL: Framework on Biology Education for Sustainable Development"

Abstarct:
The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization urges the scaling up of sustainable development (SD) interventions in education. To address this, the researcher explored a framework for biology education that combines Integrated Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics with Problem-Based Learning, termed I-STEM-PBL. The study aimed to improve instruction and meet evolving educational needs while evaluating the researcher's teaching practices. It focused on reigniting youth interest in Pili (Canarium ovatum), an endemic product in Sorsogon, where the researcher taught. Using a practitioner inquiry approach, the researcher applied the Plan, Do, Study, and Act model. A mixed methods design collected quantitative data (N = 38) and qualitative data (n = 20) at a public secondary school in Sorsogon, Bicol, Philippines, known for Pili production. The findings highlighted positive feedback from students, indicating action-orientation, learner-centeredness, and transformative learning. Students demonstrated conceptual learning and scientific creativity throughout the I-STEM-PBL process. The evaluation revealed the module's effectiveness in improving students' understanding of biomolecules and their behaviors towards SD. Challenges faced by the students and the teacher included time and resource limitations, which were mitigated through differentiated instruction and an emphasis on communication and collaboration. Insights emphasized the importance of guidance, active engagement, and a supportive learning environment. Considerations within the study encompassed a relatively limited sample size and findings specific to the geographical context, suggesting the importance of replicating the research with broader and more diverse sample groups.
