As our ship sailed towards the setting sun, Dr. Roy Francis Navea, PhD of the DLSU Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Health Technologies shared his knowledge on the great potentials of Digital Reality such as the VR in the different fields of education, business, architecture, gaming, and especially the focus of the talk, on healthcare and medical field.
Dr. Navea began his talk by asking the question, "What is Reality?" and kept his talk interactive with the BioEddies answering such questions related to the purpose of his discussion. He introduced the topic of Immersive Technologies and how these devices can make a person feel and be as if they were in that moment. He added that these technologies allow visual and immersive representation of realities that only exist digitally or in an augmented form. Dr. Navea believes that these technologies can improve life as well as the field of healthcare and to patients suffering from diseases such as stroke which was the focus of their Project SELLA, Project IBALIK, and Project SIGLA.
"Do not stop after graduating and level up your skills", is the message Dr. Navea has shared with the aspiring BioEddies as they step into the field of Biomedical Engineering. He gave thoughtful advice for the students to continue developing their capabilities and other ways such as through software or technical skills, and for sure will benefit us, BioEddies, as we try to reach our endeavors.
Delving into the groundbreaking LAPARA Project led by Mr. Francisco Emmanuel T. Munsayac Jr III, MSc., this remarkable venture commenced in August 2018, in collaboration with St. Lukeโs Medical Center, backed by substantial funding: 14.6 million PhP (260K USD) for Phase 1, 20.1 million PhP (357K USD) for Phase 2, and 14.1 million PhP (250K USD) for Phase 3 in 2023, courtesy of the DOST-PCHRD.
The LAPARA Project of the DLSU Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Health Technologies introduces an innovative robotic articulating laparoscopic instrument, which is set to revolutionize the field of surgery. Embracing the concept of minimally invasive surgery, it entails making small incisions on a patient's body, leading to reduced postoperative pain and shorter recovery times. The LAPARA instrument offers two degrees of freedom, encompassing tool movement (pitch, yaw, and roll) and hand movement (in and out), addressing the limitations of manual laparoscopic tools that only move in two degrees of freedom.
This project is driven by the pressing need to provide a solution to the stress and awkward positions that surgeons often encounter, which can lead to musculoskeletal problems. The LAPARA Project, in response, incorporates joint articulation, robotic arm control, haptic and visual feedback, and an ergonomic workstation, thereby improving maneuverability and usability for surgeons during laparoscopic surgery. Its significance extends to various stakeholders:
For patients, it promises alternative types of surgeries, excellent precision in surgical procedures, faster healing, and minimal scarring. Medical professionals stand to benefit from better control, reduced fatigue, and minimized errors during surgeries, along with enhanced dexterity and mobility, making their work easier. Lastly, the LAPARA Project bridges the gap between robotic surgery and manual laparoscopic surgery in the academic community, pioneering the development of cost-effective robotic surgical systems in the Philippines.
Economic, user-friendly, and multifunctional, the LAPARA Project stands as a beacon of progress in the realm of surgical technology.
"Innovation and Health Technologies should not be a one-man show, but a collaborative effort"
In the midst of our quest for pioneering progress, the Association of Biomedical Engineering Students (ABMES) delightedly welcomed our third speaker, Professor Nilo T. Bugtai. Currently serving as the founding director of the DLSU Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Health Technologies, he's celebrated for his recent accomplishment - securing an international patent from Singapore and receiving five patent certificates from the Bureau of Patents Intellectual Property Office - Philippines (IPO-PHL). Notably, he was honored with the 2022 National Dr. Paulo Campus Award for Medical Research by the Philippine Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology (PhilAAST).
Dr. Bugtai initiated his presentation with a succinct overview of the field of Biomedical Engineering in the Philippines, shedding light on universities offering Biomedical Engineering programs, both locally and abroad. He also introduced diverse career prospects within the Biomedical Engineering sphere, including roles such as Biomaterials Developer, Manufacturing Engineer, Rehabilitation Engineer, and more.
Furthermore, Dr. Bugtai delved into contemporary trends in Biomedical Engineering, exploring subjects like Digital Health Applications, Personal Health Wearables, and Telemedicine. He also delved into the remarkable advancements in artificial intelligence and robotics within the realm of Engineering.
Dr. Bugtai underscored the vital significance of collaborating with various sectors, with a special emphasis on government entities and medical professionals, as we continue to advance in Biomedical procedures and research. He wholeheartedly encouraged us to actively engage in collaborative research with our professional counterparts.
His inspiring words provided a glimpse into the immense potential and real-world opportunities awaiting those who aspire to make their mark in the field of Biomedical Engineering.
