MAPEX TO TRAIN MORE KARAMUI SCHOOL LEAVERS

The Salt Nomane Karamui District Development Authority has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with local technical institution Mapex Training Institute on Wednesday 18th October 2023 in Port Moresby.

Local MP for Salt Nomane Karamui Hon. Francis Yoli Arua was accompanied by the district’s Deputy Administrator Johnson Wai to Mapex Training Institute’s headquarters for the MoU signing with Mapex Director Marcus Palem Kara.

Director Marcus Kara said that Mapex is willing to grow this continued partnership with the local DDA through the MoU signing, which will see many school leavers trained by the local institution. Mr. Kara said that after giving fulltime courses to a lot of Papua New Guineans since 2015, Mapex is now looking into providing supplementary courses in Agriculture and livestock as well.

Local MP for Karamui Hon. Francis Yoli Arua said that Salt Nomane Karamui is the least developed district in Simbu province and his prime objective is to subsidize the education sector in producing a greater number of human resources for the district regardless of political sides and differences.

The local MP stated that he cannot change everything at once given the current state and condition of development progress in the electorate he represents in parliament. He sees the MoU signing with Mapex Training Institute as a driving mechanism towards achieving his main objective in his five year term.

“The DDA’s partnership with Mapex Training Institute will enable school leavers in my district to be equipped and trained to contribute back towards the development and advancement of our electorate,” said Arua.

MP Arua further alluded that this MoU signing is of high significance and they look forward to send many youths who basically missed out on formal selections to further their studies and acquiring life skills. “My electorate is low in local revenue due to basic developments that the people underwent through negligence from previous regime.” The MP then said that this MoU is part of the Tertiary Students Support Scheme and covers all tertiary institutions throughout the country.

Hon. Francis Arua further confirmed that the District Development Authority subsidized more than 600 students from the electorate who are currently studying in tertiary institutions with K1 million and the support is expected to be increased to K1.5 million next year.

The local MP said that they are willing to add and support much required number of students and young people from the electorate. He said that subsidizing education is one way and another focus will be on building standard learning facilities for schools throughout the electorate in his term as MP, as long as it complies with his main aim of producing more educated workforce in the district.

Meanwhile, Mapex Director Marcus Kara confirmed that the MoU’s duration is five years (2023 – 2027) and the institution looks forward in welcoming and training students who will be coming in shortly for registration and training. Mr. Kara said that Mapex plans to make Goroka campus the biggest and main campus for highlands region and is currently awaiting Simbu provincial government’s invitation to establish a campus in the province.
