Thank you for downloading the Taku Tūrangawaewae App & we hope you are enjoying it so far 🙏🏼
Taku Tūrangawaewae App has not only been created to assist the education for all Maori to save their Whakapapa BUT to also encourage the use of te reo Maori 😀 as a first language.
To also assist with people that do not know or are still learning te reo Maori, there is a feature to convert the Maori version of the app to English???
The following steps will help guide you to make this change 👌🏿
Step 1.
Select the menu option on the top right hand corner of the home page
Step 2.
Select Kōtaha (profile)
Step 3.
Select Whakatika I te Kōtaha (edit profile)
Step 4.
Select English

Nau mai ki te taupānga (App) "Taku Turangawaewae".
The "Taku Turangawaewae" app is a mobile application that allows the end user to record and update their own whakapapa and turangawaewae. Using this mobile application I hope to encourage maori near and far from home to go back to their kuia and koroua to learn their whakapapa whilst also giving them a platform to easily record the information and pass it on to future generations.
The app was born from the idea that with the increasing maori population living away from home (NZ) their is a growing possibility that the knowledge of our own whakapapa and turangawaewae is lost.
Whakapapa and turangawaewae was always around me as a child and was instilled into me by my kuia and koroua, and that is something I am very proud of, knowing who I am and where I come from. A sense of belonging.
Some features of the app are:
- The app allows the user to record and build a family tree of whanau members (Past and Present). As many generations as you can think of.
- Ability to build a full profile of each whanau member (upload photos, korero, videos) that will last forever.
- Information is kept private with a personal login and password created by the user.
What differentiates this app from other family tree apps is, within each individual whanau member the app also allows the user to record the:
- Waka
- Iwi
- Hapu
- Maunga
- Awa/Moana
- Wharenui
- Marae
- Wharekai
-Tipuna/Rangatira and
- Urupa
for each whanau member.
Photos, Stories, Haka/Waiata, Video Clips, and links to other web-site pages can also be saved within the profile of each whanau member. For example, Iwi web pages and You Tube videos.
Specific information about each subject can also be recorded. For example, pakiwaitara or specific korero about the whakairo or tukutuku patterns of a wharenui or waiata and haka about a maunga or waka.
The app can also be useful to help our tamariki in kura when it comes to learning their pepeha or reciting their whakapapa to the class.
It is important to remember that this app is NOT a whanau search app, reason being to me Whakapapa is considered to be Tapu and should be treated with a certain amount of respect and privacy. The user must still do their own research to find and learn their whakapapa and turangawaewae before entering the information into the Taku Turangawaewae App.
Add Youtube Videos and Weblinks from other web pages for example, Iwi website pages.
