Pi Day

14 March is Pi Day.

What is Pi Day?
A day to celebrate the mathematical constant pi (π) and to eat lots of pie, my favourite apple pie 😁.

Write the date in month/day (m/dd) format, as some countries do, and the digits in the date 3/14. These are the first three digits of π (3.14).

Take time to listen to our learners, gauge current understanding and then develop new knowledge.

Life Long Learner

As I'm a life long learner and challenge myself to learn new things I can relate to students learning new maths concepts.

Happy 6th Birthday Zest 4 Maths

Happy Birthday to Zest 4 Maths, 6 today!
Thank you to all students & their parents, past and present, for your support over the last 6 years .🙏

It's fantastic to hear that the maths and problem solving skills learnt, together with the confidence built up, have transferred into University problem solving.

Maths Fact:

Most mathematical symbols weren’t invented until the 16th century. Before that, equations were written in words.

🧐 Imagine how long a complicated equation would be!

Are you passing on your fears to your children?

My mum had a bad experience when she was sleeping in her pram. A cat jumped in to join her, and my grandma shouted to shoo it away. The experience left my mum terrified of cats. However, she was determined not to pass on her fear of cats to my sister and me when we were growing up. Mum made a positive effort around cats to not show us her fear. I’m allergic to cats but not terrified of them and my sister feels very comfortable around cats.

Remember to consider how you communicate your experience of maths to your children as it can affect how they perceive maths. I often hear parents verbalise their experience “I was no good at maths”. As a result of this, they appear to have low expectations of their children’s maths ability. Unfortunately, this negative thinking pattern is then passed onto their children, thus adding to the feeling of maths anxiety.

If you had a bad learning experience and feel you didn’t do well in mathematics, I encourage you to inspire and motivate your children to have a positive experience to break the cycle. A good experience in mathematics boosts self-confidence and has a positive impact on other subject areas which ultimately improves self-worth.

Please remember our experiences shape our beliefs.

We are delighted to welcome Christina to Zest 4 Maths.

To help introduce Christina here are a few words from her:

" I’m a 3rd year Optometry student studying at the University of Auckland. Outside of uni, I love walking along the beach and listening to podcasts.
At first, I found maths particularly hard during high school. Karen tutored me through NCEA level 1, 2 and 3 mathematics, and with her help, maths became a subject I really enjoyed and was confident in.
The one-on-one online tutoring system that Zest 4 Maths uses helped me gain a much deeper understanding of concepts as Karen taught in a way that was personalised to me. I would love to be able to give students the same confidence and interest in maths that Karen gave me."

It's wonderful to have you join Zest 4 Maths Christina and I know you'll make a difference to many young people on their maths learning journey.

Did you know that the saying ‘back in a jiffy’ is an actual measurement of time?

➡ It means 1/100th of a second.

Although these days you’re more likely to hear ‘in a hot second’.😆

A change in mindset can make a huge difference.

How amazing would it be if this was how I kids learnt to view these words!

💥Yes! You can use a graphics calculator for NCEA maths exams.💥

NZQA say that students are disadvantaged if they don’t have a graphics calculator for NCEA Maths L2, L3 Calculus and L3 Statistics.

This is also the case for some NCEA L1 maths achievement standards.

We are delighted to welcome Gabby to Zest 4 Maths.

Gabby is currently in her 2nd year of Chemical and Process Engineering at the University of Canterbury. She is a former student of Zest 4 Maths, tutored by Karen, during High School.

Gabby enjoyed the online platform Zest 4 Maths offers as it allows students to be very flexible with locations and busy schedules. Gabby enjoys helping people understand maths and looks forward to helping you.

In her spare time, Gabby is a volunteer for the Student Volunteer Army and she loves going tramping.

It's wonderful to have you join Zest 4 Maths Gabby and I know you'll make a difference to many young people on their maths learning journey.

Kate's daughter was a pleasure to work with and it's great to hear that her confidence in maths is blooming.

🐰 Happy Easter from Zest 4 Maths!

Happy New Year!

A brand new year of tutoring is about to start.

I'm looking forward to meeting new students this year and of course, tutoring my current students.

We would like to wish a Merry Christmas to you and your lovely families.

We say goodbye to Emma, who has been a great support to me tutoring students. She is leaving to go to Auckland in the new year for a full time graduate position following the completion of her degree.

I'd like to thank Emma for all her support and the fantastic job she has done in helping her students achieve great results and boosting their self confidence.

We will all miss her very much. ❤

We will be closed from Friday 18th December until Monday 18th January for the Christmas break.

Have a wonderful Christmas and a healthy & happy New Year.
