Jsoc UC

The Japanese Culture Club at University of Canterbury, New Zealand Jsoc provide weekly events for anyone to come, hang out and meet new people.

We welcome both domestic and international students from UC, UCIC and CCEL. We are first and foremost the Japanese club, and provide a place for anyone to come and practice their Japanese no matter what level they're at. We also have cultural events such as Hanami and Karaoke. In saying this we welcome any student no matter whether they have interest in Japan or not. Our weekly events include language exchange, movie nights and games nights.

Operating as usual

Term 4 so far!!
The weekly language exchanges have been a great success! We have fun every week.
JSoc and the UC Japanese department worked together to host a hanami picnic at UC on the first week of term. Great to catch up with everyone after the break.
Also the Japanese Society of Canterbury hosted a hanami picnic at Halswel Quarry Park, that many of us attended. It was so refreshing to be outside in the sun, enjoying the flowers.

Our Story

J-SOC aims to facilitate and promote the use of Japanese amongst those who are just learning, those that are interested in the culture and for the fluent speakers. The language and culture promotion is established through regular events such as movie nights (showing Japanese movies with English subtitles) “LingoSwaps” (language exchanges between English speakers and Japanese speakers), Nomi-kai (informal social gatherings), Ohanami (flower viewing) to name a few. Regardless of whether you are just interested in Japan, have lived there, or learning the language at whatever level, everyone is welcome at J-SOC.
