The Antarctic season has officially started today from Christchurch (NZ). Good luck to everyone traveling to The Ice this summer. Have a safe and productive Antarctic season!

The Royal New Zealand Air Force Boeing 757 departed Christchurch International Airport this morning bound for Pegasus Runway in Antarctica. On board were staff to take over from teh winter crews at Antarctica New Zealand's Scott Base and the US McMurdo Station.

They landed in Antarctica at 2 o'clock this afternoon after spending just under 5 hours in the air - going to negative 18 degrees Celcius, clear skies and a light Northerly wind.

Mount Erebus is the second highest mountain in Antarctica and the most southerly active volcano in the world.
It also has a rare active lava lake, one of only five long lasting lava lakes in the world.
Scientists have recently discovered extremophile bacteria living near the crater. It is believed that these conditions may be similar to those under which the first forms of life on earth developed and it is hoped that further research could give insights into the origin of life

Antarcticans at Scott Base are currently enjoying regular days and nights, something that only happens for two months of the year, during Autumn and Spring.
The 25th of April will be the last time that the winterers will see the sun until the 19th of August, when it is due to rise again

Diving under the ice in Antarctica allows scientists to collect specimens and make observations of flora and fauna living beneath the ice that they would not be able to access any other way.
