At Learning Bee Montessori we have a very strong and well established before school program.
Our before school program starts from age 4 in the Kahikatea room (3 to 6 years)

We focus on 3 key areas:
• Literacy
• Mathematics
• Social skills

We believe that these 3 areas support and grow tamariki to become confident capable learners, providing them with basic skills and knowledge that will enable them to be great primary school learners.

Learning Bee Montessori was established in November 2018. Being a brand new, privately owned centre, we wanted to make sure that we had solid links to our community, the land and history of the area.

This is the story of how our four classrooms got their unique names:

In 1850, Papanui Bush was discovered by Settlers arriving on the first four ships from Great Britain.
Papanui Bush covered an area from where Papanui High school is today, to beyond Vagues Road.

Papanui Bush consisted primarily of four tree varieties:

· Kahikatea

· Kanuka

· Totara

· Matai

By 1857, Papanui Bush was no more due to settlers cutting down the trees to use as building materials and for firewood.
Today, planting of new trees and the Papanui Domain link back to what once was Papanui Bush.

At Learning Bee Montessori, we value our heritage and the local community of Papanui and what it means to be a valued establishment of this area.
We chose to name our classrooms after the four trees that once stood proud and strong in Papanui Bush, Kahikatea (3-6 years), Kanuka (2-3 years), Totara (15 months to 2 years) and Matai (0 to 15 months).

Attached are beautiful illustrations and information about the four trees. These have been done by Sandra Morris and can be found in the book "Discovering New Zealand Trees"

Learning Bee is very proud to show off our amazing Korowai from
Our Korowai represents Whanake. Which means to move onwards and upwards, to grow and to rise.
We chose this design to represent our tamariki graduating from Learning Bee Montessori. Taking the next step in their learning journey to school.
We chose black and yellow as they represent the bee in Learning Bee Montessori. Like the humble bee, all our tamariki take on challenges, work as part of a team and do amazing things everyday.

People often wonder how the Montessori method works for our younger tamariki. These tamariki range from 17 months to 2 years.
They are all working on different practical life skills of pouring water using two hands for control, spooning items from one bowl to another and carefully sweeping items into the circle. All these skills promote independence, concentration and fine motor control.
We offer our tamariki a prepared learning environment that encourages freedom of choice, promoting tamariki with a sense of self worth and being valued in their choices.
Toddlers are active, curious, and are seeking to
make sense of their world. They enjoy testing
limits, causes and effects as they develop and
refine their working theories. At Learning Bee Montessori we offer a space especially designed for our active exploring toddlers, supported by our passionate kaiako.

Last week we had a very special visitor in the Kahikatea room. Our friend Zia Garcia came in to take our very first dance class. This will be happening twice a month for our 3-6 age tamariki.
From this dance class tamariki learn skills in co-ordination, follow instructions, concentration and most importantly have fun while learning something new.

What a great way to celebrate the end of term 2 with an amazing disco. We had balloons, glow in the dark face paint and special guest Zia who performed an original dance piece.
Zia will be joining us next term to teach the kahikatea children some cool dance moves twice a month.
We are still open Monday to Friday 730 to 530.
We look forward to sharing more memorable moments with you over the year.

Today at Learning Bee Montessori we had an Easter Egg hunt. All of our family and whanau were invited to join in with looking for laminated eggs that tamariki then gave to teachers who, in return gave them a chocolate egg. This was then followed by a shared afternoon tea.
Thank you to everyone for joining us and to the staff for putting on such a fun event.
Happy Easter.

Wishing all of our families, whānau and friends a happy and safe Easter break.
From all the team at Learning Bee Montessori

In light of events on the 15/3/2019 in Chch, we realised the importance of keeping our environment fun and how valued all our families and whanau are to us. So to say thank you to our families for their on-going support we had a special visitor who cam in today to do some face-painting for the children and each child also gets a buzzy bee balloon to take home. Thank you to Makeupadz & Body Art for your amazing and beautiful face painting.

We have had some wonderful experiences over this term in each of our 3 rooms.
Our Kahikatea room (3-6 age) had the chance to learn about the life cycle of a butterfly with caring and watching caterpillars eat away at our swan plants, create cocoon's and then hatch into amazing monarch butterflies.
Our Kanuka room (2-3 age) have been enjoying some amazing mat times lead by our qualified teachers. These mat times include cd stories, music and movement and resources. From these mat times our Kanuka children are learning skills in concentration, turn taking and following instructions. These valued skills will support them as they transition into our 3 to 6 room.
Our Matai room (0-2 age) have been developing meaningful relationships with their teachers as we have had many new babies join us. Our older Matai children have been working on the basics of our Montessori curriculum with starting to develop skills in concentration and turn taking.

Big news this week! Learning Bee Montessori is thrilled to announce the opening of our third classroom, the Kanuka Room.
The Kanuka Room is a special learning space, designed specifically for children over 1.5 years of age. The environment, programme and teachers (Sue, Amy and Daisy) support young children to become independent learners, ready to transition into the 3-6 years Montessori programme.
It has been a delight to introduce our existing children and families to the Kanuka Room, and also welcome new whanau who are joining us for the first time.
We'd love to show you around. Please call us on 925 9528 to arrange a visit to the Kanuka Room or any of our other classrooms.

Care of the environment is an important part of the Montessori curriculum. Children learn to take care of, and pride in, their surroundings. Such activities are not just domestic tasks, they help children develop independence and self-confidence. Care of the environment also builds social cohesion and unity in a group of children, as they care for their class community together.
After meals at Learning Bee Montessori each child takes responsibility for emptying their food scraps into the compost bin and washing their dishes.
Over the past few weeks we have been welcoming lots of new friends to our centre and the kaiako (teachers) noticed the kai area getting increasingly busy. It was decided to appoint “Community Helpers”, a small group of children who take responsibility for the communal jobs associated with enjoying a meal together. These tamariki set the tables with place mats and cutlery then once lunch is finished, work together to wipe the place mats and tables, and sweep the floors.
“There is a great sense of community within the Montessori classroom, where children of differing ages work together in an atmosphere of cooperation rather than competitiveness. There is respect for the environment and for the individuals within it, which comes through experience of freedom within the community.” - Dr Maria Montessori

The management and staff at Learning Bee Montessori would like to wish all of our tamariki (children), whanau (families) and our wider centre community a very Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy 2019! Apart from the statutory days we are open throughout the holiday period so if you know of anyone who would like a fresh exciting change for their child's education in 2019 please call us to arrange a tour of our beautiful, purpose built Montessori centre. What a wonderful couple of weeks it’s been since we opened! Our focus at the moment is on relationships – with our families/whanau, our new Montessori environment and routines, new kaiako (teachers) and new tamariki. We are so proud of our first group of enrolled children, who are managing these new experiences with confidence and smiles!
We’d love to show you around our beautiful purpose built centre licensed for children aged between 0-6 years. Please call us on 925 9528 to make an appointment for a tour and to find out more about what makes the Learning Bee Montessori experience so special.
"The goal of early childhood education should be to cultivate the child’s own natural desire to learn" – Dr Maria Montessori
