Kia ora

As you will be aware our storage sheds had the locks cut out and then they were broken into with some things being stolen.

We have been very lucky to have both Totalspan and Dominator support our school by repairing the doors, supplying new locks and changing the lock system for free.

We Thank Totalspan and Dominator for their amazing support.🤗🤗

This donation has helped us immensely as being a small school we always struggle financially and the repair was not covered by insurance.

Please support Totalspan and Dominator if you require a new shed or door.

Please help… our school sheds have been broken into, probably Thursday night, and some tools and sports gear have been stolen. If you are driving by after school hours and notice anything unusual, please let the Police know.

Ouruhia Choir joined massed school choirs at the Lions Christchurch Schools Music Festival last night in the Town Hall. The singing was stunningly good, and the Yr 5-8 orchestra outstanding. Thanks to Mrs Watson for giving our singers such a special night to remember!

We lost water this morning but thanks to Pump Services all back in working order.

Pet Day today at Ouruhia! We started with Jonno Taylor and his Border Security dog, seeing how it is trained to detect food in luggage.
Jonno was at Ouruhia School in the 1980s with Gary Stead (Black Caps coach), and he exhorted our kids to do their best and believe they could do anything!

Looking for something fun in the Styx to do during Heritage Festival?! Look no further than Hīkoi ki Kā Pūtahi – take a walk on the wild side co-hosted by the Styx Living Laboratory Trust, Kahukura Rongoa Maori Trust, and Christchurch City Council. This exciting day will take place on Sunday October 15th from 10am-3pm at the Rongoā Māori Demonstration Site/ Te Waoku Kahikatea Reserve and is a free event! There will be guided walks at 11:30am and 1pm with a BBQ in between at 12pm (koha). There will also be carving demonstrations, weaving workshops, and painting sessions!

This event is being held in collaboration with Mokopuna Maori Arts and Taa Moko, and the Green Lab and is a part of Christchurch City Council's Heritage Festival https://www.ccc.govt.nz/news-and-events/whats-on/event/hikoi-ki-kaputahi-take-a-walk-on-the-wild-side

We planted lots of native trees with the Pūharakekenui Conservation group this afternoon. Our kids worked so well... I love the way the older ones support their younger buddies…that’s what we call tuakana-teina relationships. 😊
More planting coming up at the Waimakariri/ Te Rauakaaka and Marshland Rd near the Coca Cola site.

We are planting trees at Styx/Pūharakekenui River tomorrow (Mon 31 July), walking down long drive opposite school at 1:15pm. Parents welcome to join us. Weather will be fine…children just need sturdy shoes and a drink bottle.

Mānawatia a Matariki!
A bit hard to photograph this morning with the moon so close. Look for Orion’s belt/Tautoru (the Pot), go left to find the inverted “V” of Ta**us, then go left to see Te Iwa o Matariki !

Another brilliant performance from NZ Playhouse on Friday, performing "Treasure Island" to round out the term. Lauren, Jackson and Caitlin were amazing, and had our kids enthralled and entertained for the whole hour. Wonderful talent and great theatre!

What a great way to start our Book Week! Gavin Bishop, ONZM, author/illustrator of over 70 books, was welcomed to our kura yesterday. Fabulous to see so many of his wonderful books, hear about the wonderings, work and research that goes on before publishing, and seeing his plans, sketches, and artwork, sometimes accepted, sometimes rejected by the publisher. A great example of the values we emphasise at Ouruhia School, never giving up when it gets hard, aiming for excellence, loving the learning and research, sharing the joy with others. Thank you, Gavin…and congratulations on being honoured as a nominee for the prestigious international Hans Christian Andersen award.

Fun in the sun today…

Thank you for the team of helpers at our working bee yesterday. A big job spreading 20 cu metres of playground chip, trimming trees and starting our senior vege garden. Special thanks to Kenneally Timber, Belfast, for the macrocarpa for our raised beds, and to CLS, Kainga, for the special deal on the playground chip. This is a wonderful community, and Ouruhia School really appreciates your support.

Whole school trip to the foot of Maukatere/Mt Grey today to see where the mountain from our school pepeha is. Luxurious buses and awesome drivers from Bentley Coachlines, beautiful bush walk, and finishing off the day with lunch and a play at Pegasus. Thanks to NZ Community Trust for supporting our trip.

Our community picnic in the school grounds last week was a nice way for school families new and old to connect.

Some magic at Ouruhia School this morning! Thanks Mrs Winton!!

Calling all those Year 1 - 2 children, come play Netball in Term 2.

Big night out celebrating the end of primary schooling, and the next stage of our lives. Our Yr 8s are at The Court Theatre, seeing Home Alonesome. Thank you for being part of our school and a great group of seniors!!
