Ngā tamariki in Te Puāwai Rua continued their ANZAC Day commemorations today by learning all about ANZAC Day and creating their own poppies. “He aha te me a nui o te ao? He tangata, he tangata, he tangata.” - What is the most important thing in the world? It is people, it is people, it is people.

Tahi were super lucky to have Alice from Dino-Land come and share our ROARsome day with us. We met a T-Rex, children enjoyed feeding him and brushing his teeth and for those feeling extra brave they gave him a pat. We also enjoyed making our own plaster fossils and searching for fossil prints in the sand. We had the best day and such an amazing way to finish our group inquiry learning about dinosaurs.

“The child is, by nature, hungry for words; he loves strange, long words like the names of dinosaurs and constellations. He takes in all these words without understanding their meaning, as his mind is still taking language in by a process of unconscious absorption.” Maria Montessori

We had a RAWRsome day here in Te Tipu celebrating all things dinosaurs, we had show and tell this morning where the tamariki introduced their dinosaur friends from home, a dinosaur picnic for morning Kai and lots of arts and crafts set up throughout the day, what a fun way to start our school holiday programme, we cannot wait for the fun to continue this week, see you all tomorrow for wheels day. 🦖🦖🦖

Our tamariki have been showing an interest in books and reading this week, and we have observed lots of special conversations and social interactions. This shows how important reading is when developing language and socio-emotional skills. In the Montessori method it is said that by exposing children to diverse stories and experiences books can contribute to empathy, emotional intelligence laying the foundation for lifelong learning.

The tamariki in Te Tipu have been exploring a range of practical life experiences focusing on clearing their dishes and washing them before we send them off to the kitchen. In the Montessori method, practical life activities aim to foster independence, concentration, and coordination in children by engaging them in everyday tasks, thereby preparing them for real-world skills and a sense of responsibility.

The tamariki of Te Puāwai Rua had an exciting day yesterday with a special visit from a police officer! They loved exploring the police car, trying on real police vests, and learning all about the important work our officers do. A big thank you to our visitor for making the day so memorable! “The things he sees are not just remembered; they form part of his soul.” - Maria Montessori

The tamariki in Te Tipu have spent the last few weeks practicing their early numeracy and alphabet during our morning mat time and the ABC’s clapping song has quickly become a classroom favourite. In recent weeks we have noticed a lot of development in verbal communication and social play within the classroom, this has led to some very special friendships forming. Maria Montessori believed it is through play that children learn to make sense of their environment, develop social and cognitive skills, and express their unique personalities.

“It is not nature alone, but nature and the environment together, that give us the miracle of the little child, the miracle of the little child who speaks.” - Maria Montessori

Tahi Tamariki have been enjoying challenging themselves with numeracy activities. Felix is completing the number rods and extending on this by adding the sandpaper numbers to each rod. This is teaching Felix to recognise the symbols that represent each number and recognising the concept of measurement.

Dr. Montessori put it this way, "Great creations come from the mathematical mind, so we must always consider all that is mathematical as a means of mental development.
