Happy Birthday Dr Jean! The Centre wouldn't exist as it is without the incredible work of Jean Seabrook who not only noticed the needs of students with SLD but took action to help them. She would have been 101 today.
We are very grateful for the funding we recently received from Pub Charity Limited towards staff wages - covering overheads like this helps keep our fees as low as possible and our services accessible to those who need them.
We are so grateful to the ANZ Staff Foundation for the donation towards travel costs! This will be a big help for clients who have to come from outside of Christchurch to access diagnosis and support for Specific Learning Disabilities.
🔹🔷 We are seeking a new teacher for our three week intensive course working one on one with students with learning difficulties. A very rewarding role!🔷🔹

This week the Centre had the pleasure of a visit from Kerri Ledingham to exchange ideas about dyscalculia. Kerri learned about Seabrook McKenzie through a family member who was diagnosed with a specific learning disability by us many years ago. She teaches at RMIT University Victoria, Australia, training students to work as teaching assistants with neurodiverse individuals, and has been awarded an ISSI VET Fellowship to research supports for dyscalculic students in post-secondary education. Her knowledge and experience revealed limited awareness and resources for Dyscalculia in post-secondary education – teachers are willing, but feel under equipped, and students do not always access support.
In Australia, these students struggle because of numeracy expectations, but research shows that they can learn to manage the diagnosis with correct supports in place. Kerri's goal is to speak with experts on best practice and evidence-based approaches and disseminate findings to support students with dyscalculia to access learning and thrive in vocational education. Our staff enjoyed meeting minds with Kerri, demonstrating how we support students with Dyscalculia and learning about the Australian Vocational/University sector and her current research. We look to forward to the conclusions.
We are so grateful for the recent grant from the Blogg Charitable Trust towards subsidising learning assessments. Thank you for helping keep costs down for families!
