Hagley Adult Literacy Centre (HALC) provides opportunities for learners from all walks of life to develop their literacy, numeracy, communication and computer skills.

Operating as usual

HALC staff are always keen to learn new things, to update their skill set and to access resources which help with their teaching.
Last Monday, Caroline Morritt shared her knowledge about phonics and how the reading process occurs. It was a fascinating session delving into the way the brain processes information, and how that transfers into our long-term memory.
Did you find learning to read an easy thing? Or has it remained a bit of a mystery, especially when you get those looonnng words to work out! We can help you - it's all about phonics!

Ōtautahi Learning Days is an Ako Ōtautahi Learning City Christchurch festival celebrating learning in its many forms across our city, our place. In 2024, from the 13th to the 19th of May, we explored the theme The Future of Learning, by connecting rich conversations, encouraging hands-on learning and focusing on future opportunities.

Hagley Adult Literacy Centre was there to offer learning opportunities to all Christchurch residents - in our community classes, English classes, Youth classes and Special Needs class. Feel free to get in touch with us if you want to pick up your learning journey.

We were thrilled to receive a visit from Amanda Wilson this past week. Amanda is a recipient of the Churchill Fellowship Trust and is studying literacy education methods which help adults overcome psychological barriers to learning. Her study tour includes USA, Canada, Ireland, & United Kingdom.

Here's what she had to say -

"Wow! What a wonderful start to my Churchill Fellowship…. thanks to Joanna Fox and the fabulous tutors and staff at the Hagley Adult Literacy Centre.

Hagley are superstars at creating welcoming, supportive, and FUN learning environments. Their resource collection is so accessible and enticing, you can’t help but reach out and dive in!

These wide variety of hands-on games and interactive activities were mostly developed in-house by tutors who aren’t afraid to be vulnerable and who are very in-tune with their learner’s emotions.

It all helps to reduce education anxiety and free up capacity for curiosity, creativity and learning.

If all this stopped tomorrow, I would have already discovered so much…and yet it’s just begun!

Looking forward to building on the experience of the Hagley Adult Literacy Centre team as my Churchill Fellowship continues".

All the best to you Amanda as you find methods and resources used around the world!

There's nothing like learning something new - it's great for self-confidence and for keeping the old brain active! Come along to Tūranga next Wednesday to make your choice. We'll be there, so come say "hi".

We are super pleased to have partnered with Recycle-A-Device and now have a team of dedicated volunteers who spend their Thursday lunch-hour, dismantling and checking quality pre-used laptops. We replace batteries and parts and get them going again.
Many kiwis are being left behind as they cannot afford fit for purpose devices, which enables access to the world of education. We hope to be a small part in remedying this.

Our next FREE Class 2 Truck Licence class begins in just over a week's time. If you know someone who would appreciate some help learning the theory before sitting this test, get in touch with us straight away! Feel free to share around your networks - this is such a good opportunity, well worth two afternoons per week over the next six weeks.

HALC learners took part in the Hoake ki te Taiao - City Nature Challenge at the end of April. We downloaded the iNaturalist app and used it to identify flora and fauna which we found nearby. The results from this challenge will be presented at Tūranga tomorrow 7th May from 6pm-7.30pm. Why not go along and find out if we bet Wellington and become leaders in biodiversity awareness.

We have just 15 places left in our workplace programme for 2024. If you are working and would like some help with your reading and writing, speaking and listening, and maths skills - get in touch with us now! You'll be glad you did.

What choices are you making to ensure our lovely green planet is healthy as can be? HALC classes will be off to the recycling station for a visit in Term 2, to learn some more about what they can (or can't) recycle. Photos to come!

Since April 2nd, New Zealand has celebrated Autism awareness week which aims to increase understanding of those with autism, in the wider community.
Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects cognitive, sensory, and social processing, changing the way people see the world and interact with others.
Every autistic person is unique, with a wide range of skills, qualities, interests, and personality styles. As the saying goes, “if you have met one autistic person, you have met one autistic person.”
Autism is estimated to be present in 1 in 54 people.
HALC enables ongoing learning with many people who have a neurodiverse learning challenge.

Dyspraxia is a term which refers to lifelong issues with motor skills, balance and co-ordination. This can make learning and undertaking day to day tasks quite a challenge. You can access the Dyspraxia Support Group of New Zealand on Facebook.

New Zealand Dyspraxia Awareness Week 25th to 31st March 2024.
Join us this week as we raise awareness and share information from and for our community.

It's Neurodiversity Celebration week - and we'd like to celebrate all the wonderful learners who are at HALC. We see such talent and ability in all our learners, with everyone bringing their strengths as well as their challenges, to their studies.

Another lovely poem from Cathryn - maybe this will inspire you to go out and explore this summer!

Walking and Talking

Walkways to wander
constitutionals with comrades,
companions, canines

wandering pathways
and journeys

Trekking, tantalizing,
triumphant, thoughtful
tender talking
touching thoughts

Meet Cathryn - a poet who attends our community Literacy class in Upper Riccarton. Cathryn has written a whole book full of poems. We thought we'd share this lovely poem she has written about summer at Brighton beach.

Brighton Beach

In the summertime when
the weather is hot

we went to our favorite picnic spot
at beloved Brighton blessed beach

pleasure, leisure time for all
the families and friends as well

people with their canines going
for constitutionals

children building sandcastles
children frolicking in the sand dunes

How about a spot of brunch, lunch
What's on the menu today?
Beverages and refreshments
while we watch the waves.
