Nigeria's journey in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), the world's most prestigious pre-university mathematics competition, began relatively recently compared to many other countries.
Nigeria first participated in 2006. Since then, the country has taken part in 14 editions of the IMO (as of the latest official records). The Nigerian team is typically selected through national competitions organized by the National Mathematical Centre (NMC) in Abuja.
The IMO is extremely competitive, with participants from over 100 countries each year, and top-performing nations (like China, the USA, Russia, and others) often dominate the gold and silver medals. African countries, including Nigeria, have historically faced challenges in securing higher medals due to factors like resource limitations, training intensity, and the global talent pool.
Nigeria's achievements so far consist entirely of bronze medals and honourable mentions (awarded for strong performances just below medal threshold):
Gold medals: 0
Silver medals: 0
Bronze medals: 5
Honourable mentions: 16
These bronzes represent significant accomplishments for Nigeria and the African continent, as medals (especially bronzes) are hard-earned in this elite contest. Early bronzes in the late 2000s/early 2010s (including around 2012) marked important milestones, with some reports noting them as among the first four Black African participants in certain contexts.
Nigeria continues to build its program, with students occasionally excelling in related events like the Pan-African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO), where they have won golds. However, in the global IMO, the focus remains on steadily improving performance and inspiring more young mathematicians.
For the most up-to-date or detailed individual results (including specific years and names), check the official IMO website at imo-official.org (country code: NGA). Keep supporting math talent in Nigeria—it has huge potential!

In ancient Greece, around 570 BC, a curious young man named Pythagoras lived on the island of Samos. Fascinated by numbers and patterns, he traveled to Egypt and Babylon, learning secrets of geometry and the stars.
One day, back home, he stared at a simple right-angled triangle. He noticed something magical: the square on the longest side (the hypotenuse) was exactly equal to the sum of the squares on the other two sides.
Excited, he shouted, "Eureka!" and proved it: a² + b² = c².
This discovery changed math forever, but Pythagoras saw deeper—numbers weren't just tools; they were the hidden harmony of the universe.
He founded a school in Italy where followers lived like a family, studying math, music, and the soul, believing numbers held divine truth.
And so, the theorem named after him still lights up classrooms today, reminding us that one quiet observation can unlock eternal wonders. ✨

Dear Students, Parents, and Guardians,
Al-Profy Remedial Maths Academy is pleased to announce a comprehensive, exam-focused course on Differential Calculus scheduled for February 2026.
This specialized program is designed specifically for students preparing for WAEC, NECO (SSCE), and JAMB UTME examinations. Differential calculus forms a critical component of the JAMB Mathematics syllabus (under the Calculus section) and frequently appears in SSCE papers. Key topics to be covered include:
Limits of functions and their evaluation
Differentiation from first principles
Rules of differentiation (power, product, quotient, and chain rules)
Differentiation of algebraic, trigonometric (sine, cosine, tangent), and exponential functions
Applications: rates of change, tangents and normals, maxima and minima problems, and optimization
The session will feature:
Clear, step-by-step explanations tailored to Nigerian exam formats
Detailed solved past questions from WAEC, NECO, and JAMB
Practice exercises with marking schemes and common pitfalls analysis
Strategies to build speed, accuracy, and confidence for high scores
Whether you're addressing foundational gaps, aiming for distinction grades, or seeking to strengthen your calculus skills ahead of exams, this course provides targeted, remedial support to help you excel.
