Studying dance made me understand how movement carries history, emotion, healing and identity. Even during my research project, I found myself drawn to how dance can become a form of therapy and expression for people in different ways.

And the more I learned, the more I realized that many of the dances we admire today have roots that trace back home to Africa.

There’s so much beauty in our movement, our rhythm and our culture, and I love being able to express that through dance.

Follow our journey for more dance stories, culture and movement through our eyes 🤍

Sometimes purpose finds you through the thing you love most. For me, dance became more than movement. It became vision. It became a life started to live. What started as passion turned into a bigger reason to build. And it pleases me every time that I get to do it with my ride or die…my wife Jennifer

Quick backstory about how this was achieved, we actually finished one take already but it didn’t sit right with us.

We both knew something was missing.

With salsa (and even the little bachata feel in there), the flow matters. The turns, the timing, how you stay connected through it all. If it’s not there, you can feel it immediately.

So we ran it again just to add this part.

And that made it come together.

How many spins did you catch? ☺️

We don’t talk while dancing but we say everything.

We’ve known each other for 15 years. Started out as friends, long before any of this. Dancing together didn’t come naturally at first. Timing was off, we got in each other’s way more than we’d like to admit, and there were days it felt like we just weren’t getting it.

But we stuck with it.

Now it’s a lot easier. Not because we’re perfect, but because we understand each other better. We don’t have to say much, we just move and it works.

This was one of those moments.

I didn’t start dancing because I loved it. I started because I needed somewhere to put everything I couldn’t say out loud.

The frustration. The pressure. The things that were happening at home that I didn’t have words for. Dance gave me a room where none of that existed. Just me and the music and the floor. A few years down the line, it stopped being an escape.

It became the thing I was running toward not away from. And somewhere along the way, I met my husband, Alphonsus. We were both in school, moving in the same direction without realising it. Two people who had quietly decided that this was the life..not a hobby, not a side thing. The life.

That’s how Alphonso Dance started. From two people who couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

This is us. This is why we dance. Follow us to see where the story goes from here.

We’ve learned different styles, different rhythms…
but one thing remains the same. Once your body understands movement, it never lets go.

Dance stays with you.

What do the Ijaw, Kalabari, Ikwerre, Ogoni, and Etche have in common?

Across Rivers State, Nigeria, traditional dance preserves cultural identity, heritage, and community values. These Nigerian traditional dances reflect generations of storytelling through dance.

And guess what? These are not even all the traditional dances in Rivers State😅

If you are passionate about African dance, Nigerian culture, and preserving indigenous performance traditions, follow Alphonso Dance so you do not miss the next cultural breakdown.

To our Facebook family, you’ve been with us since day one.

You’ve watched us show up to every performance like it’s our best.

You’ve watched us host trainings, shows, and performances passionately, even when the odds were against us.

You’ve seen the rehearsals that stretched late into the evening. The costumes stitched with intention. The stages that started small but carried big dreams.

You didn’t just follow a dance brand.
You grew with a movement.

This year, we stepped into a clearer vision.
Stronger identity.
Sharper purpose.
Bolder storytelling.

Alphonso Dance is not just about performing.
It is about preserving culture.
It is about excellence.
It is about representing Nigeria with pride and precision.

This rebrand is not a change of heart.
It is a deeper commitment to who we have always been.

Thank you for believing in us.
Thank you for sharing our videos.
Thank you for filling seats, sending referrals, and speaking our name in rooms we have not entered yet.

The vision is bigger now.
The mission is clearer.
And we are just getting started.

Stay with us. The next chapter will be unforgettable.
