Results are immediate and the questions are discriminating. Actually, many are included in the quiz precisely because they are good at highlighting weaknesses.

In general, the more questions at student answers the more successful they will be in their exams, all things being equal. These quizzes go one step further by ensuring that the correct answer to each question can only be chosen by students who have clear and correct thinking.

The quizzes are used by many schools in the UK, but I am aiming at individuals who don't have access. Best thing is, it's all FREE. Maths is not a spectator sport. So, as all you beautiful animal lovers know, we have many horses that have been rescued and are currently alive only because of our director Moira Van Der Westhuizen. β™₯

First up - Any donation over Rs200 with the reference "HorsesTopaz" received before Friday 06th December midnight will go into a draw to win a stunning matching pair of Certified Silver Topaz (+- 2ct) valued at around Rs1000 each.!! (with 3 chances to win!!) Please email proof of payment to [email protected] - or just post the name of your account used for payment in the comments below so that we can easily reconcile your donation. (please note that the gemstones will have to be collected on Mauritius as we cannot ship overseas.)

PS - I use mine to help with mindfulness exercises -and they're AWESOME. β™₯

finally, Please SHARE SHARE SHARE this post and help ALM overcome their December challenges in order to continue their pawsome (or is it hoofsome? πŸ˜‚) work in Mauritius. β™₯ ... aaaaand GO!

Visual Proof of Pythagoras' Theorem

If young people find Pythagoras' theorem hard to grasp in the beginning (year 8 or 9) it is usually because their algebra is not sufficiently advanced. A visual explanation is a great alternative but there are surprisingly few good videos on this topic.

This one is an exception, which is why I'm posting it.The teacher has a warm connection with his students and importantly, really gets the full message across.

😎😁😎 Be assured that in a test, no-one will ask a student to actually prove this theorem. However, having a proof they can relate to gives them a much better idea of how to utilise the theorem, πŸ‘πŸ”₯πŸ‘

Why A-level chemistry might not make doctors better

An interesting post from the Royal Society of Chemistry. Of all the subjects medical students were required to take at A level, chemistry was non-negotiable. Now it seems they are dropping the requirement that medical students study a Level chemistry in the hopes of diversifying the applicant pool. It appears even the pharmacology lecturers at Med school don't find school chemistry that relevant. What do you think? It's definitely an interesting one. Is chemistry at A-level essential for medical school? 29/08/2019

Maths tuition at your own pace - fast or steady.

Whatever maths course you are signed up to I can work with you to ensure you achieve your full potential. From year 5 through to IGCSEs and A levels/IB, our sessions will to put you on the right track. I am based in Mauritius and see people in person here, but am equally happy to give online tuition. I have experience with children and adults alike and am quick to realise what you do and don’t already know.

It’s important to me that you don’t feel you are wasting your time. For adults, who are working and studying in their own time maybe by distance learning, that is particularly relevant. I studied my first degree by distance learning with the Open University and had a fantastic experience with them, so I can appreciate the plight of students taking this route. I have no interest in dragging out lessons to keep students signed up for longer. 😁 If you can learn at an accelerated pace I will gladly teach you accordingly. Bear in mind, though, that tuition can only go quickly when students make a lot of effort to memorise and practice the work they have already done.

I’m going to help you with that too. We won’t go at such a fast pace that I can’t ensure you have all the core knowledge and key skills in place. So often that’s a problem. For talented students who move around the globe they can miss the presentation of a particular topic in both schools and not realise - how could they even know? They just notice their grades going down and don’t understand why. Happily there is an easy fix for that.

It’s important to say that not everyone is buying into the current trend of accelerated learning. Some benefit more from taking their time. We can do that too. I don’t have a preference per se, but can offer a considered opinion after having worked with a student for a short while.
