FOUR CO-OP SENIORS ACCEPTED TO UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO

By Matt Bailey & Dereka O'Brien

Today the University of New Mexico, in Albuquerque admitted four Co-Op Seniors for the Fall 2016 semester. Co-Op Principal, Chelsea Armstrong is an alumni and native of New Mexico and said she “was absolutely thrilled,” at the news. “This is the best thing ever! I’m so proud and happy for these awesome and talented young men and women.”

Chelsea mentioned that any issues could be eased by the fact that her relatives will be there, and able to support the Co-Op students with both their transition from High School to college, as well as, their transition from Island life to life in the U.S.A.

Jenice Bukida, Max Niedenthal, Kathy Liu and Marcus Bennett are all expected to accept the offer to attend UNM. They have all applied for the “Amigo Scholarship,” which entitles them to pay in-state tuition rates, which will save them over $10,000 annually.

Kathy, who has never left Majuro, worries about bills and grades, but is still excited. “I’m quite anxious but happy and most excited about eating Mexican food,” she said.

Jenice also brought up food. “The first thing I’m going to do is get nachos,” she said. Jenice also said she was nervous to live without her parents for the first time.

Max said he was very proud and “glad all the other are attending too”. Max is excited to try out for the UNM Basketball and Football teams.

Marcus said the transition seems like it shouldn’t be too difficult. “The dorms look good, the people seem nice and it seems there’s quite a laid back lifestyle there.”

ONLINE SPECIAL: Sticky Fingers Strikes Co-Op Again and This Time It's Personal...

Last Thursday Middle/High School Principal Ms. Chelsea had $300 stolen from her purse in her office.

"I had taken $300 from the ATM that morning to pay for Cameron's babysitter. I'd always been so careful about locking my office door, because this isn't the first time I've been stolen from. It's really upsetting, I'm just so sad" she said.

First grade teacher Ms. Molly was testing in her office and left for about ten minutes to get a flu shot. This is when the person or persons walked into her office, opened her draw and stole her money.

"It takes some giant balls to do this," said Chelsea's husband and owner of the MDM, Mr. Matt. "I'd like to find who it was and crush these balls with the heel of my boot, if they have them."

Once Chelsea noticed the money was missing she made many of the high school students go into a room so she could start a bag search. Her emotions got the better of her, and through tears she ceased the bag search after about five minutes. "I hate that. I'm not a policeman," she said.

"The worst thing is that we always try and be so nice to everyone here, and the fact that someone would steal fro us, is really depressing," Matt said.

Chelsea reckons she's had thousands of dollars stolen from her in the last year and a half. This theft includes two phones, an iPad and various amounts of cash.
