Did you want to know about Winifred P. L. Brumskine? Below is her story. ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿฝ

Winifred P. L. Brumskine Preschool
WINIFRED PL BRUMSKINE HER STORY
Mama as my Dad called her she was also known as Aunt Winnie by her nieces and nephews, Tetee by younger brother Walter, Sis Winnie her other siblings, Fred by her close friends in Bassa, Teacher Winifred by her students, Tee Winnie by her relatives and others in Bassa.
She was the fourth child of Rev. Walker P. L. Brumskine and Margaret White Brumskine was born in Upper Buchanan Grand Bassa County on the 10th of September 1929. Of her seven siblings, five lived to adulthood and included her elder brothers Hannibal and Philip, kid brother Walter and her kid sister Mayme.
As much as I have learnt theirs was a happy home characterized by discipline, hard work, laughter and
above all faith in God and in His word.
Although both her parents were devout United Methodists her father a minister of the gospel and her mother the church organist, Mama was an Episcopalian. I am not sure why this was so; but Mama attended the Bromley girl's school in Virginia where she completed her elementary education. She told it this is also where she first encountered her future husband our grandfather John Richards at a school dance.
Mama completed her high school in Buchanan at Hartsell now Bassa High School and enrolled at Cuttington College where she earned her (B.A.) Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education. A few of mama's class mates included the late Senator John Rancy and the late Raymond Jallah. Mama later thru a Liberian government scholarship spent a year at the Kent State University in the United
States.
She was married to John Richards (our grandfather) in 1961, during that time she taught at the Daniel E. Howard School in Mamba Point near where they lived. The marriage did not work out and she returned to Buchanan with her baby our dad.
Mama's professional life was devoted almost entirely to education. She taught adult literacy for the LAMCO JV in Buchanan and later she served as the Principal for the Government Elementary School in Upper Buchanan.
In 1975 mama was asked to deliver the July 26 Oration for Grand Bassa County at the Unification Hall on the Fair Ground in Buchanan. Her last assignment with the Grand Bassa School System was as Coordinator for the Buchanan Curriculum Materials Center in Lower Buchanan on the Bassa High School Campus. There amongst other related activities she produced the BCMC monthly Newsletter. Mama's other passion of course was her church in Upper Buchanan the St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. St Andrews is the oldest Episcopal Church in Liberia, I am told, apart from the one in Harper which
joined Liberia later.
During her life time Mama made sure the Church doors stayed opened and was very instrumental in the reroofing of the church building in the 80s. That roof work still remains on the building to this day.
Mama went home to be with the Lord in May of 1990. She did not have a proper funeral and her body lay along the road side like so many others during those evil days. Her bones were later interred by relatives in Upper Buchanan. We are blessed to begin this Pre-School project as a memorial and
testimony to her life's work.
God, bless you all.
