I dare add to it: STOP PLANNING, realize that the CHILDREN should own all of what you think is your job.

It does not need to be as hard as we believe it needs to be.

Play Counts -Keynotes/Trainings/Coaching

I am preparing to lead a staff training at a nursery "in" England tomorrow morning, and stumbled upon this GEM:
Beckett so thoughtfully explains where ideas come from. (Trust me.. you are going to want to watch this one!!!)
Children do not get to come up with, let alone TRY their OWN ideas when adults are constantly telling them what to do, how to do it, how long to do and who to do it with.
Children NEED time... LOTS OF TIME for TRUE PLAY.
TRUE PLAY is uninterrupted play that is 100% the ideas and thoughts of the PLAYERS without control from an external-driven agenda.

Please stop with the material envy!
I understand the desire to go "all natural" with materials etc.... but budgets don't always allow for it, nor time.

The materials are only one PART, the more important part (in my opinion) is the FREEDOM of your environment. RELAX, and let go of the boundaries that exist with the materials you already have. Let go of those adult ideas you have of what the materials are SUPPOSE to be used for. SET THEM FREE.

It’s not so much about WHAT the children have access to as it is about the FREEDOM they have to use what you DO have as the children determine!

Are they hurting anyone?
Are they hurting anything?

NO?
Then give them FREEDOM!!!!

These two children needed a table....but they were all being used by the other children.
Instead of complaining that no one would share...they went to work to solve their problem!!! This is what happens on a regular basis in an environment where children know they are FREE TO DO!

Play Counts -Keynotes/Trainings/Coaching

We need to allow our children the Freedom
to play

Look at all of their hard work, but especially Owen’s hard work (the child in the blue t-shirt). This is his play.....but we know it’s so much more! All that shifting of his body weight is getting his body ready for WRITING.

Prewriting does not involve any writing utensils, or even gripping small items. Writing involves the whole body...and writing success is joyful when one’s whole body and brain are ready BEFORE a child discovers their own reason to write.

Janet Lansbury

Interrupting a toddler's inborn desire to explore and discover to give a lesson in letters, numbers or reading is like painting a house before the foundation is built. It discourages them from working on what is really important, and wastes both our child’s time and ours.

What if...
We all worked harder to remember that while the "right" materials are important, FAR MORE IMPORTANT are the freedoms you are able to gift to children with materials you already have:

The freedom to CHOOSE how to use materials: toss out your preconceived adult ideas, and quietly be in the moment and embrace the ideas of children.

The freedom to ASK for what they need: instead of placing everything children might need to use certain materials, give them an opportunity to ask for what they need.

The freedom to CROSS POLLINATE the toys: get rid of boundaries that prevent imagination and innovative thinking. Let the blocks mingle with the books and babies -- great things will happen.

The freedom to FAIL: you do not need to make sure materials are perfectly suited for each other before you present them in the environment, that takes away a good chunk of the learning. RANDOM is fine. In fact, the most amazing moments in my program were inspired by random mixtures of materials.

The freedom to DISCOVER: invitations do not need to be pretty and obvious. All too often, well-intentioned teachers remove the "open-endedness" from open-ended materials simply because their invitation is quite closed-ended and obvious.

The freedom to OWN their technique: just because they aren't trying to accomplish a task using a technique that YOU would use, does NOT give you permission to step in and correct them. Give children the freedom to not only own their technique, but to also ask for teamwork (aka: help) WHEN THEY decide it's necessary.

The freedom to be BORED: adults are afraid of bored children. BOREDOM is the birth place of BRILLIANCE and should be celebrated.

The freedom to OBSERVE: sometimes, children want to sit back and simply observe. TRUST ME...what is happening in their brain during moments like this is NOT simple. There is value in observation.

WHAT IF. 🤔
