President Dale Phipps of the St. Kitts Teachers' Union (SKTU) gives high commendations for the recently held Steward's Workshop.
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
The ONE DAY WORKSHOP was geared towards defining the roles of the Steward's of SKTU.

The General Secretary of SKTU Lavern Collins chaired the proceeding. She welcomed everyone and PRO Dalton Esdaille gave the invocation. President Dale Phipps greeted the gathering of Stewards and challenged them to learn as much as they can in an effort to equip themselves for the task at hand.

The first session was conducted by Mr. Ron Collins, Past President of SKTU. He, being a very knowledgeable and dynamic presenter, informed all the stewards that they all play a very critical role because they are the face of the union and the first point of contact that members have with the union. They were encouraged to take the task seriously and to represent the members because the union's presence in schools is important. Some roles of Stewards were also discussed which included; Stewards are to know what the union stands for, build solidarity among members, build bonds/relationship with colleagues, be supportive of union activities, etc.

Miss Natasha Daniel from the Ministry of Agriculture was the second presenter. She spoke about Agriculture and its importance and encouraged participants to partake of healthier eating habits and more so living a better and healthier life. She also pointed out that more can be done in schools to assist our students and this can be an initiative done through the stewards. New initiatives in Agriculture were discussed and she has promised that Hydroponics will be introduced in the Primary Schools.

The third session was done by Mrs. Belinda Wilson, President of the Bahamas Union of Teachers. She prefaced her presentation by outlining some characteristics of union leaders. The difference between a Gripe and Grievance was explained and stewards were admonished to avoid the gripers. In addition, the steps when dealing with a grievance was explored and all were encouraged to ensure that teachers documented their grievance before the matter can be dealt with by the union.

During the final session, stewards were able to share their experiences about the implementation of the COVID-19 Protocols as they saw them at their respective schools. This was an open session and stewards spoke to the challenges experienced while at school throughout term.

At the end of the one day session, stewards gave expressions of thanks for the educational workshop.
