[10/19/17]   Members of the Insurance Council of St Lucia held their 42nd Annual General Meeting at the Sandals Regency Golf Resort & Spa under the theme: “S.O.S ---- How do we survive?" on Thursday October 12, 2017.

As is customary, on this occasion the council paused to take a critical look at the industry recognising the work of the council over the past forty-two years, the current state of the industry and the prospects for the future.

In his feature address Minister for Equity, Social Justice and Empowerment, Hon. Lenard Spider Montoute, highlighted the role of insurance in our communities in the wake of the devastation suffered in Aruba and Dominica at the hands of hurricanes Irma and Maria. Our members sympathise with our brothers and sisters of those islands and pledge our support to their recovery efforts. In-fact, as we gathered, our president Claudius Francis was on a special mission in Dominica assisting with damage assessments.

The council recognised and awarded the top producing insurers and members who excelled in academic pursuits during the financial year. Sagicor Life Inc was awarded the largest life insurer while St Lucia Insurances Limited, the largest general insurer. On the academic and professional development end Christa Eudovic of Sagicor Life Inc and Yvonne Randolph of St Lucia Insurances Limited were both recipients of the Roderick Clarke Scholastic Award in Life and General Insurance respectively. Clearly there is a link between professional development and performance.

Members elected a new executive committee to manage the affairs of the council for the period 2017/2018.
The new Executive is as follows:
President – Claudius Francis
Vice President – F. Alvin Malaykhan
Secretary/Treasurer – Warren Montgomery
Public Relations & Education – Joseph Dolor
Motor Sub-Committee Chairperson – Ursuline C Mitchel – De Beauville
General Sub-Committee Chairperson – Joralia St Louis
Life & Health Sub-Committee Chairperson – Sabina Charles Kirton
Social Sub-Committee – Anne Marie Herman
Brokers Sub-Committee – Tamara Dantes

A staple on the agenda of our AGMs is the address from the Executive Director of the Financial Services Regulatory Authority where Mr. Calixte Leon as he puts it “shares his thoughts on the conduct of the insurance business in Saint Lucia”. The regulator’s address focused on four key areas:
1. Management Approaches, inclusive of: Probable Maximum Loss and Reinsurance
2. Accounting Infrastructure
3. Claims Settlement
4. A review of performance of the sector

Mr. Leon remarked that in the wake of the multiple catastrophic tropical cyclones sweeping through the Caribbean resulting in near total destruction, it is prudent that insurers ensure their risk management regimes and reinsurance programmes are sufficiently robust to deal adequately with those catastrophic events.

[07/24/17]   Life insurance frequently asked questions Series #2.

Why buy life insurance?

One of the most important reasons to purchase life insurance is to ensure your loved ones are provided for financially. Life insurance is also useful in helping your survivors pay bills and debts after your death, as well as for funeral expenses. It may be used for wealth accumulation and distribution as part of an overall financial strategy.

How much life insurance do I need?

Generally the amount of protection you need is a combination of what it would cost to help your surviving family members and dependents meet their current needs (like taxes, food, clothing, utilities, mortgage payments, etc.) plus future obligations (like college and retirement funding) – minus the resources that your surviving family members could draw upon to meet those obligations (spouse's income, savings and investments, other income producing assets, and any life insurance you might already own).
You may also want insurance for wealth accumulation or distribution purposes during your lifetime.
