General relativity didn’t just require physics—it demanded entirely new mathematics.
Born in 1873 in Padua to a Jewish family, Tullio Levi-Civita possessed a quiet brilliance that would later help power Albert Einstein’s geometric understanding of gravity.
In the early 1900s, Einstein envisioned curved spacetime but lacked the mathematical language to describe how objects move within it.
Enter Levi-Civita. He developed the concept of parallel transport—a precise method for moving vectors along a curved surface without distorting them.
This idea unlocked the geometry of curvature and became one of the foundational pillars of general relativity.
Levi-Civita’s methods shaped differential geometry, guided Einstein’s field equations, and continue to underpin modern physics today.
This is the mathematician who gave gravity its mathematics.
