Indossate le sedie, i ragazzi percorrono la città, a piedi, in autobus, la propria sedia come la propria ombra, sostano, rientrano. [...] Un giorno cioè, un gruppo di persone, in fila indiana, si rendono autosufficienti: danno vita a degli oggetti disarticolati senza forma e senza senso, cedendo ad essi comunque qualcosa. [...] That a barn – a roof on open columns – should be mysterious too? Is it that we think of it as a temple, or that we feel that something that when full is a block, a solid, a mass then suddenly a void, then a void anticipating a mass, is a mysterious event? For after all, the substance of house or office is very infrequently removed, the roof over only remaining, with clear air under and the landscape and the sky beyond. Or do we feel for the barn as we do for the renewal of a tree by the seasons? Perfect when in leaf – a mass – in summer, perfect when veined air in winter. Especially perfect if we feel winter and emptiness as a cleansing, and spring as a renewal, a miracle every year. Maybe a barn is like that.

workshop Centre Periphery during Unibz Design Festival in Free University of Bozen-Bolzano

“Centre/Periphery”: September 16-20, 2014: a trans-disciplinary workshop with architects Gruppe, graphic designer Roosje Klap and productdesigner Thomas Vailly.

The temporary platform “Centre Periphery” is an opportunity for design students from Bozen Bolzano and other schools (national and abroad) to meet, discuss and produce artefacts within a 4-day workshop, where we created an 'island' together.

The concept of a journey on an island is used as a search for the unknown / sublime; a precondition for our suspension of disbelief; a trigger of the imagination when entering unknown lands, a safe haven for free ideas.

In the past, distant islands represented gaps in the map of human exploration. Besides being a refuge from regulations for humans, the isolation of islands such as Galapagos, Madagascar or Australia, allowed animals and plants to find their own shapes and behaviours, creating something wild and unique which would not be possible anywhere else.

Suburbs and peripheries are islands in their own right, with distinct structures, rules and regulations. Geographically, and in many ways culturally too, hidden within this island lies Bolzano, our own little free state: our island in a concrete, urban sea, surrounded by mountains.
