ICCROM - conserving culture, promoting diversity

ICCROM is an intergovernmental organization dedicated to the protection and preservation of cultural heritage worldwide. ICCROM is the only institution of its kind with a mandate to protect cultural heritage worldwide, including monuments and sites, and museum, library and archive collections.

Cultural heritage is fundamental to sustainable development and human well-being. Yet, it needs care, protection and effective management. Those entrusted with conserving heritage need tools and support to ensure they can do their job to the best of their abilities. That’s where we come in. ICCROM is where communities, heritage professionals and governments come together to innovate and advance knowledge. Our strength lies in shifting mindsets and creating heritage leaders for the future.

It was a big week for our World Heritage Leadership programme, with the launch of 'People-Centred Approaches to the Conservation of Nature and Culture' – a course bringing together 21 participants from 18 countries to explore people-centred approaches to heritage conservation. They’ll be exchanging their experiences and practices from various regions of the world twice weekly for the next 10 weeks, ably supported by 30 diverse heritage professionals.

The course kicked off on Monday with welcome speeches from us and our partner IUCN, followed by three sessions during the week on the 'heritage place', its context, benefits, and services. Stay tuned for more updates between now and when it all wraps up in October!

📣A year like no other: #ICCROM2020 Annual Report released❗️

2020 was defined as much by hope as it was by hardship – a dichotomy we have chosen to reflect in the design of our Annual Report.

The Report provides an overview of significant accomplishments in core areas such as capacity building, research, and knowledge-sharing, with benefits for more than 100 countries. Our Flagship Programmes proved to be agile and robust, and we ably minimized disruption to valued services, embraced new modes of course delivery, and even launched several highly relevant prospective activities.
We warmly thank our Member States and partner institutions, totalling 267 in 2020, for their support and collaboration in accomplishing our achievements.

Rome on 29-30 July, under the Italian presidency.

Our Director General attended this historic meeting of culture ministers, and ICCROM will be a critical player in implementing the actions called for in the Rome Declaration, which was adopted during the event.

“It’s important now to reflect on the terminology of cultural heritage in the light of these twin crises: the pandemic and climate change. I recommend the G20 reflect on cultural heritage, which is not only to be admired but is part of our daily lives and can be the solution to our problems. Its protection can no longer be postponed.”

As the Italian Minister of Culture stated, investing in culture means investing in sustainable economic growth and job creation – goals we are committed to at ICCROM.

🚨deadline extended to 20 August 2021🚨

The role of heritage in the pursuit of peace requires careful consideration. If you are someone working to safeguard heritage and build peace in a conflict setting, we'd appreciate your help in developing a new interactive publication on the subject.

All you need to do is send us a summary of your project and its outcomes by 20 August 2021.

Here's how to do it 👉https://bit.ly/36M0p20

Shortlisted projects will be invited to participate in a collaborative analysis workshop, leading to the co-creation of the second publication of the Toolkit on Heritage for Peace and Resilience. This is being developed in partnership with ICOMOS-ICORP Turkey (http://www.icorpturkiye.org), Coventry University, with the cooperation of the Integrated Approach for Security and Peace Directorate (European External Action Service - EEAS)
and the ALIPH Foundation

"Conservazione non vuol dire immobilismo. Dobbiamo permettere ai nostri giovani di liberare le proprie energie. L'Italia deve essere custode di tesori e laboratorio di idee. Il nostro patrimonio culturale è frutto dell'immaginazione dei nostri antenati, quello dei nostri nipoti dipende da cosa sapremo fare noi", così Mario Draghi nel suo indirizzo ai partecipanti.
