In the past few days, a small delegation of the Graff-IT and SCRENIM Projects, together with other scholars, have spent some intense and fruitful days of inspections and institutional meetings in Salento. Carlo Tedeschi, Marco Albertoni, Marco Maggiore and Roberta Durante would like to truly thank Fernando Miglietta of Torre del Parco (Lecce), Prof Carmelo Caroppo and the School Principal Anna Antonica of the "F. Capece" High School in Maglie, the staff of the Palazzo Marchesale in Melpignano, and the Mayor Valentina Avantaggiato for the warm hospitality, helpfulness and enthusiasm with which they have welcomed the Graff-IT and SCRENIM delegation.

Call for a postgraduate Research contract on the project “Graffiti as a source for the history of written culture: census, study, valorisation" (DR 1806 - prot. 84365)

The candidate will collaborate in the activity of census of Italian graffiti and in the implementation of the "Graff-IT Digital Archive” database. He/she will also participate, together with the other members of the research staff, in the research, communication and dissemination activities of the Graff-IT project (Specific project activities: WP 1, 2, 3, 6). The activity will involve field missions, as well as archive and library research. A commitment to the research internationalisation will be required, also through the development of skills related to the development and management of European competitive projects, and participation in national and international research networks.

The team of the Graff-IT/Screnim Projects went to Cles to visit the stunning Palazzo Assessorile, where prison graffiti (and not only) are preserved. The group also had a fruitful meeting with Architect Ruggero Mucchi, Mayor of Cles, and Councilor Simona Malfatti, to discuss the valorisation of the palace's graffiti.

Call for a postgraduate Research contract on the project “Development and management of Digital Humanities and Digital Knowledge activities” (ERC-2020-AdG Graff-IT Project).

The candidate will coordinate the development of the Graff-IT database and act as a point of contact between the research team and the developer team. To this end, he/she is expected to:
- conduct constant testing on the existing database and external platforms (already existing or under development) to assess compliance of the current develolment to the most recent standards and interoperability with other frameworks (API REST, endpoint SPARQL, server of images IIIF, etc.);
- ensure that all the committs of the development are up-to-date and fully documented on the final open-source release and long-term preservation;
- ensure that the platform design is appropriate for the E.C. requirements (especially Open Science and FAIR principles) and for the research team scientific needs, in line with the platform requirements (annotation of images and textual contents, imaging with reflectance transformation, linking to Authority files, etc.).

In addition, the candidate will:
- develop a specific DTD for the TEI XML encoding;
- curating the virtual exhibition “The Signs of Mankind”.

A NEW FIELD MISSION IN BASILICATA AND PUGLIA

The team of the Graff-IT Project has just carried out a new field mission, organised by Dr Sabrina Centonze, in several urban and extra-urban sites of Matera (Basilicata) and the Gargano area (Puglia). Hundreds of alphabetical and figurative graffiti, many of which are still unknown to scholars, have been surveyed in the Tramontano castle and the cathedral of Matera, in several rock-cut chapels in the Murgia Sant’Andrea plateau, in the sanctuary of St Michael the Archangel at Monte Sant’Angelo and in the rupestrian church of Ognissanti on mount Gargano. An interview was also released to Antonella Losignore for TRM Network by Prof Carlo Tedeschi and Dr Sabrina Centonze. Special thanks to Raffaele Paolicelli, Francesco Foschino, and Raffaele Rinaldi.

The Graff-IT ERC-Project will participate in the 2023 edition of the European Researchers’ Night, a Europe-wide public event which will take place in 26 countries on Friday 29 September. From 4 p.m. until late in the night, the Campus of the University “G. D’Annunzio” of Chieti-Pescara will host the longest Academic day of the year, with stands, concerts, guided tours, seminars, and many other initiatives.
