Reflective pavement coating helped cool down one of Los Angeles’ hottest neighborhoods over a year-long period, according to a new study, but researchers argue that increasing shade is still a better way to protect people from extreme urban heat.
The study involved painting more than 700,000 square feet of dark asphalt surfaces in Pacoima were covered with solar-reflective pavement coating in the summer of 2022.
Urban areas are especially susceptible to extreme heat, but a range of solutions are available – like increasing green areas and waterways, improving insulation, and providing cool or shady areas , especially for the most vulnerable.

Glimpse of the Webinar on World Environment Day 2025
On the occasion of World Environment Day 2025, a national webinar was organized on 6th June 2025 by G S Empower Skill Training Trust to address the urgent global issue of plastic pollution under the theme “Save the Environment & Save the Future.”
The session began with opening remarks by Dr. K. Vasudevan, Founder and Managing Director of the Integrated Institute of Disaster Management (IIDM), Tamil Nadu and The keynote address was delivered by Mrs. Meenakshi Rajagopal, I.A.S., Former Additional Chief Secretary and Project Director (PTSLP-IFAD).
A special address was delivered by Mrs. Aruna Basu Sarcar, I.F.S., Ex-Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Chairperson, Arasu Rubber Corporation, and Mr. Karunakaran added ground-level insights on community-based plastic reduction initiatives, showcasing successful behavioral change models and local innovations.
Adding a technical and Civil Engineering lens, Er. Awdhesh Kumar, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering at Invertis University, India, presented on “Swachh Bharat, Safe Bharat: Enhancing Urban Disaster Resilience through Plastic Waste Management ” Contributing further, Dr. K. Vasudevan delivered an expert presentation on “Community-Based Plastic Management for Coastal Resilience,”
With over 210 participants from across India, the webinar concluded with a unified call for collective action, innovation in waste management, and grassroots engagement to end plastic pollution and build a sustainable, disaster-resilient future.
