Number of position available: One (01)

Essential qualification: M.Sc. in Polymer Sci. and Technology/ Chemistry/Environmental Science or M. Tech in Chemical Engineering / Materials Science / Biotechnology or any relevant streams with consistently good academic record. Preference will be given to the candidate with NET or GATE qualification.

Age limit: Must not be over 28 years as on June 07, 2024 (relaxation is applicable as per the norms/orders of Government of India).

Desirable qualification: (i) Prior experiences or hands-on training of polymer processing, (ii) Basic knowledge of textile or textile processing

PhD opportunity: The candidate selected for this position may register for regular Ph.D. program in JISIASR, JIS University.

Fellowship: (i) 31 ,000/- + HRA to Scholars who are selected through (a) National Eligibility Tests CSIR-UGC NET including lectureship (Assistant Professorship) or GATE or (b) A selection process through National level examinations conducted by Central Government Departments and their Agencies and Institutions.
(ii) 25,000/- + HRA for others who do not fall under (i) above.

Duration: Position is purely temporary. Initial appointment is for One year, which may be extendable up another one years solely based on the performance.

Postgraduate (PG) Students, PhD research scholars, and esteemed faculty members from Centre for Interdisciplinary Sciences (CIS) of JIS Institute of Advanced Studies and Research (JISIASR) visited NICCO Engineering Services Limited (NESL) on May 15th 2024 to experience an industrial live processes and production units, along with best management practices. NESL mainly deals with fabrication of customized online leakage shilling products with diverse compositions, Belzona protective coating, Valtest technology, Spiral welding, clam design.
NESL also extends expert services to sole extensive industrial leakage problems and coating requirements. It was a very informative visit to enrich the practical knowledge for both the students, research scholars, and faculty members. JISIASR team had a direct interaction with the technical and production unit of NESL. The students visited the characterizations and testing labs. All the staffs and workers of the company are very humble and supportive. Warm hospitality extended from the manager and staffs of NESL is highly appreciated. Overall, this visit will open up a new horizon for collaboration between NESL and JISIASR on several aspects of research on advanced materials and their applications in near future.

Seminar organized by CHeST, JISIASR:

Mr. Vyshakh R Panicker, PhD student of Microbial Genomics Group at Malopolska Centre of Biotechnology, Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland visited the JIS Institute of Advanced Studies and Research (JISIASR) Kolkata on December 13, 2023 as an alumnus of the Centre for Health Science and Technology (CHeST) at JISIASR.

He delivered an insightful lecture titled "On understanding the host range of Klebsiella phages: Lessons learned from their RBP diversity". The talk nicely opened up the potential of phage therapy as a powerful alternative to combat the infections caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae.

Abstract of his lecture:
K. pneumoniae is a Gram-negative opportunistic bacterial pathogen responsible for a wide range of diseases including pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and other hospital associated infections, apart from showing an ever-increasing trend of multidrug resistance worldwide. Vyshakh talked about not only the species specificity of Klebsiella phages, but their strain-specificity within the K. pneumoniae species. He explained that such a high range of specificity was to a large extent contributed by the receptor binding proteins (RBPs) present in the phage tail fibres, by initiating phage-recognition to specific receptors on the bacterial surface and the capsule. His studies at both sequence and structure levels showed that the host range and specificity were affected by the number of RBPs present in the corresponding phages and the high diversity reflected by the central and C-terminal domains (but not the relatively conserved N-terminal domain) of the RBPs responsible for the depolymerase activity by degrading the capsular polysaccharides of bacteria. He concluded that this high genetic modularity among the RBPs might be crucial toward their application as potential vaccines against the bacterial pathogens.
