We'd like to thank Christophe Plais for his ceaseless work in empowering the youth and uplifting communities for decades. These are the names of some kids from Don Bosco Ashalayam Kolkata, ASHA TICI, and local communities who've been trained and been employed by Decathlon in stores in Kolkata and across India. In addition to working in sports retail, the youth also learn vocational skills in fields like carpentry, welding, bakery, mobile repairing, hairdressing, and more.

Our thanks to Christophe for taking the time to share a vision with our team, a vision we'll ceaselessly work towards for the community.
On , let's take another step to bring about social change with muscles of iron and nerves of steel as Swami Vivekananda believed.

Here's a glimpse at how Decathlon Foundation trainees at ASHA TICI are taught to build their own future by learning vocational skills for employability, for refurbishing their home, to build their playgrounds, handcraft furniture, and do it all with teamwork. w/ Don Bosco Ashalayam Kolkata

Babu Ghosh from Don Bosco Ashalayam Kolkata recently arrived in Kirkwood Community College in Iowa as part of the Community College Initiative Program cohort. Excited and ready to begin this new journey, Babu says "I am in a huge campus with all the facilities. Everyone is so helpful and always willing to guide me. I am liking it here with all my new friends from different countries sharing their cultures. I can't wait to explore more of this city and U.S. Coming on this program is one of my biggest achievements, which I will never forget. It is a wonderful feeling."

Happy moment to see a training lab inauguration for ASHA TICI Don Bosco Ashalayam Kolkata students with Decathlon Foundation.

The kids can learn job/life skills & be trained in workshops for cycle servicing, t-shirt printing, racket stringing, and more.

The lab has been designed to be similar to a Decathlon store to help the kids practice more roles.

There are afternoons which will remain etched in my mind as special ones and yesterday ours at Marbella's Elgin was sure such an occasion.
The vibe is warm and beautiful, your transported as soon as you step in. The coffee fabulous and beside all the usual coffees please check out the Coffee Sangria. The food was delicious Cheese Balls, Fries n Dips, Pizza, Fish n Chips, Pasta but the most special thing was the delight and happiness on the faces of our little guests from Don Bosco Ashalayam Kolkata who were bought across by our friend Christophe Plais.
A terrific afternoon made more special because dear friend RJ Arijit dropped by and the fantastic photos taken by my young friend Shubham Nandi

"Earlier, when we'd encourage girls to take up rugby, it was not an easy conversation with some parents. They'd ask, "Why will girls play rugby? It's a boy's game." Now, the mothers come and approach us on their own to involve their children. It is a very rewarding feeling to see the children become more than they thought they could be.

"Children always like to explore and learn new things. That's how I took to rugby. Growing up in Don Bosco Ashalayam Kolkata, I got to see a craze around the game that seemed to pull me. I wanted to be a part of it and I dedicated myself to it.

"I got a chance to play in various junior level tournaments, and then go study Business Management in Washington State, Seattle with a scholarship from the US Consulate. After coming back to India, I decided to study Sports Management, as I owe all that I am to sports and I believe in its power to change lives. Continuing with my passion for rugby with Jungle Crows, I got an opportunity to play for the Indian team for the first time in 2019. It was a moment of great pride to represent my country."

"With Khelo Rugby, we teach the sport in about 35 locations in Kolkata, and we try to help the children mature through the game. We approach the parents and help them establish a direction for the children- the importance of education, the options available to move ahead in life and earn a living. We try to talk one on one with the kids and be there for them."

"I always wanted to give back to the community and the kids. When I look at them today, I see my past and where I used to be. As a kid, I was not a part of any sports activity until I got an opportunity to try rugby, and that changed my life. I want to help as many kids as possible discover the game and discover themselves through the game."- Pratap Kundu
Don Bosco Ashalayam Kolkata boys of class 10 and 9, boys scout and team of Ashalayam staff, Father Mathew and Father Jose and with the help of the police officers of Kadamtala station, are continuing the food distribution in the area of Howrah which has become one of the covid 19 hotspots of Kolkata.

Thanks to the support of Association de Soutien à Ashalayam - ASA France and all the friends who donated

Grâce à votre soutien les distributions de nourriture au foyer de Kadamtala continuent pour les familles et les enfants de la gare.
Le quartier de Kadamtala est devenu un "hotspot" de Kolkata et subit un confinement sévère.
Our thanks to Munna Singh and the team for creating emergency ventilators/masks with a 3D printer & our Easybreathe masks for Institute of Neurosciences Kolkata "We saw this as a chance to help our community. Coming from Don Bosco Ashalayam Kolkata & ASHA TICI, I got to learn Electronics and communications and get a diploma in Engineering from Pailan College of Management & Technology. I thought of taking a job but I was encouraged to study further, so I got to study B Tech as well at The Heritage College. I help out at the foundation by teaching the kids, helping with electrical issues and more. Playing in the Jungle Crows rugby team allowed me to be a part of something bigger than myself. Together, we are stronger."
"With the Coronavirus pandemic, after looking at Isinnova's work with the Easybreathe mask, we got to printing Charlotte valves and fit them to the mask to create emergency ventilators/masks. We took masks from Decathlon Sports India and equipped them with a Charlotte valve and shared with the Institute of Neuroscience, Kolkata. It may be a small step, but it makes me really happy to see something my hands worked on be used to help others."- Munna. w/ Christophe Plais, Sagar Mahajan

On Saturday 26th of September 2015, in celebration of the bicentenary of Don Bosco’s birth, DB Ashalayam Kolkata had the great pleasure of inaugurating a new Vocational Training Centre. The centre was blessed by Rev. Fr. Angel Fernandez Artime SDB, the Rector Major of the Salesians, in presence of Rev. Fr. Nirmol Gomes SDB, Provincial of the Salesian Province of Kolkata.
Rev.Fr. Angel was extremely pleased to meet our children and insisted upon shaking hands with every single one of them. The children were deeply moved by his gesture. They also greatly appreciated the delicious meal that was offered to them by our friends from Terapanth Yuvak Parishad.
To show their gratefulness, our children treated our guests with a touching performance about the life of street children and the help they receive from Ashalayam. They were greeted with heartfelt applause.
It was a wonderful day for the Children and Staff of Don Bosco Ashalayam, and they will remember it for years to come whenever they enter their beautiful new Vocational Training Centre.

French event in asha-shop!

On Saturday 25, around 20 French speakers met in Ashalayam coffee-shop for a French-speaking event.

Organized in partnership with the association “Kawa”, which aims at recreating social link through French meetings all around the world, the event was a real success! The participants could exchange their ideas and point of view on the topic of childhood: memories, child rights, the condition of children in India, and so on. It was also the occasion to communicate on Ashalayam projects and sell handicrafts made by the youth in our Vocational Training Center.

Hoppefully, this event is the first of many more to come, thanks to the participation of volunteers like Thibault from France, who is currently involved for asha shop. Many thanks also to Sélina member of Kawa and friend of Ashalayam, Rita and Patrick (asha shop in-charge), Lorenzo, volunteer who supported the event and all the participants!
