Here is an important analysis for all the smart young lawyers who are planning to join criminal or civil litigation.
If you really want to pursue these careers, you will find a way. Still, you need to know the market realities. I am sharing some interesting data for your benefit.
There are 130 cr Indians.
How many of them can afford your fees? Let's see.
Only 1% of Indians paid income tax in 2020. This means less than 1% of Indians earned more than Rs 5 lakhs in a year!
As of 2020, only 46 lakh individual taxpayers have disclosed income above Rs.10 lakh.
We can assume that the entire legal market for legal services for individuals (leaving out businesses) who can pay a reasonable legal fee is restricted to the 46 lakh individuals.
How many times in their lifetime will such a person go to court? How many
times a year?
The number is abysmally low. There are around 20 lakh advocates in India, a vast majority of them do litigation for individuals.
The number of criminal cases filed is around 80k per year!
The number of civil cases filed in district courts has been steadily reducing. I could not find recent data, but old reports show this trend.
The trend has strengthened thanks to specialised tribunals & mediation. Also as pendency increases, fewer people bother to litigate disputes.
Conclusion: In India, litigating for individual clients is a very small market with
very high competition.
There is also no prospect of massive growth in these practice areas in immediate future unlike many other emerging areas of law practice.
For whatever work exists, there are entrenched service providers with pre-existing relationships, reputation & systems in place that make entry on newcomers very hard. Influx of -1 lakh new law grads every year makes things worse.
BCI approved seats in law colleges: 1.5 lakh
Law grads with no other options simply join district court litigation. Which means the competition for young lawyers get worse by 20-50% (varies from place to place, worst in metro cities) year on year while the market size: does not even grow 5%.
Things were not like this even 20 years back. Only 10-20000 approved seats for law existed. Competition was nothing like what it is today. The seniors in the bar who encourage young law grads to litigate in district courts don't seem to appreciate the sea change in dynamics.
This is a huge reason why so many young lawyers suffer a lot when they join litigation. Forget newcomers, even old timers are struggling as things get worse by the year.
So when people when you ask an Advocate " Dada ektu fees ta KOM hobe na " next time keep in mind a few things :-
1. You never ask a doctor the same.
2. We also have families and dependents to look after.
3. Most importantly don't disgrace our Nobel Proffesion.

She took 65 LACS to settle the "dispute"
We feel ashamed as a human being that women have reduced RAPE into a JOKE , thats how men are getting trapped and they suffer.
