Why do we mark 26 June?
The UN International Day in Support of Victims of Torture on 26 June marks the moment in 1987 when the UN Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment came into effect. Today, there are 174 State parties to the Convention.
What constitutes torture?
"[T]he term 'torture' means any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person for such purposes as obtaining from him or a third person information or a confession, punishing him for an act he or a third person has committed or is suspected of having committed, or intimidating or coercing him or a third person, or for any reason based on discrimination of any kind, when such pain or suffering is inflicted by or at the instigation of or with the consent or acquiescence of a public official or other person acting in an official capacity. It does not include pain or suffering arising only from, inherent in or incidental to lawful sanctions." — Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (1984, art. 1, para.1)

The General Assembly declared June 26, 1987, to be the International Day against Drug addiction and Illicit Trafficking by resolution 42/112 of December 7, 1987. This decision was made as a sign of the Assembly's will to step up action and collaboration in order to realize the vision of an international society free from drug addiction.
This global observance, which is supported annually by people, communities, and several organizations worldwide, attempts to increase public awareness of the serious issue that illegal drugs pose to society.

A true and interesting example of Harnessing Sports Diplomacy through G20: The G20 New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration said: “We reiterate our commitment to the G20 as the premier forum for global economic cooperation and its continued operation in the spirit of multilateralism, on the basis of consensus, with all members participating on an equal footing in all its events including Summits.”
It continued: “We also look forward to the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2024 as a symbol of peace, dialogue amongst nations and inclusivity, with participation of all.”
IOC President Thomas Bach welcomed the statement. He said in Lausanne: “We would like to thank very warmly the G20 Leaders, who include for the first time the African Union, for their invaluable support. The IOC will continue to work with full commitment to achieve these goals, which are also our goals.”

Bach has welcomed the suggestion that India's possible hosting of the Games would be discussed next month.
"That's up to India," Bach told CNBC-TV18.
"Here our doors and hearts are wide open.
"There is a strong case for the reasons I am giving and seeing how India is flourishing and developing and how India now is embracing Olympic sports.
"So, there is great potential for both.
"India can play a much more important role in the Olympic Movement and for the Olympic Movement to have such a growth potential as with India.
"It's of course very welcome."
